Anyway, sorry I have been staying away.. the new setup of mothering scared me away for a while, and just when I was starting to get comfortable navigating it, we were in a bad car wreck. I have missed work and all the kiddos were in the car too, so I am juggling appts for everyone. It is a nightmare. Thankfully we all survived- bumped, bruised, scraped and sore, but nothing permanent.
i'm glad everyone is ok. I've been wondering where you were.
the new format bugs me too, but i dont' want to leave you ladies. :)
The update from us--DH got a job offer at the fair! It's in Kotzbue, which isn't exactly where we were hoping to go... we talked it over though and feel like we could live there for a couple of years at least. So we gave them a yes although we have not signed anything yet. He's applied for 17 SpEd jobs in Anchorage district, and a bunch here and in Fbx too. Mat-Su seems to not list jobs...does anybody know anything about that?! Anyway, we figure we'll give it a month or so, and if he gets an offer we like better then we'll go with that. But if not, we do have Kotz lined up. (We don't want to make them wait long, dont' want to impair their ability to get someone else if we don't take it after all...but during May there are lots of shuffles so it's still playing fair to switch tracks)

I know Mat-Su lists employment on thier borough school website. Don't know if that includes teaching positions?
Congrats on the doula classes!!!

well, we ended up buying a 2009 used one. it has 10,000 miles so still very new. still working out the payments, etc. Sucks because we didn't owe that much on our old car, but insurance companies don't have to give you something "equivalent" they have to replace the value of your old car.. anything as old as our old car has FAR more miles... so we just had to bite the bullet. Still I think we didn't do too badly. Good thing, too since we were looking EVERY DAY for 2 weeks.

super exciting! I am not planning on going and since the Alaska Birth Network is only helping with the advertisement, I don't even know who is going! The trainer is hoping to get 20 people so you might see someone you know!
Awesome!

Our life has been crazy. We bought a house in Palmer, and I'm just about six weeks from my due date. I am pretty chill with things. No one batted an eye with the planned home birth this time, and I love my midwife (Susie Terwilliger in Eagle River), but sometimes it would be nice to meet with naturally minded ladies IRL.
Does anyone know of any actively meeting mama groups in the Valley? I haven't ever met with LLL before, but I think I'd really like to. I don't know how I'd do as a midwife or doula, but I sure would be interested in being a LC someday if the right training and opportunities presented themselves. Anyway, that's just a dream. I'm mostly just wondering about how to get together.

Would you be interested in helping the Birth Network set up some valley meetings? We have the interest but are lacking the volunteers to help do the work. It's not hard. PM me if you are interested.

What would be involved? I can never make the Anchorage meetings. The one out here a couple weeks ago I ended up having derby practice at the same time, then being sick & missing both!
Congrats on the house! I am in Wasilla & would also like to meet some more non-mainstream families. Count me in if you find an active group please!

Yes, I might be interested. I am pregnant and expecting a new little person soon (as well as mothering a 2 yo), but if it were a monthly (or so) thing and didn't require a LOT of running around in between times, it might work really well for us. Also if someone like Rik-E wanted to start something WITH me, we could really go to town.

Is there anything else for internet out here in matsu besides MTA and GCI? We want to get netflix (streaming movies and things) but need higher usage for the internet. GCI isn't available here, and MTA would be at least $100 a month which is more than satelite which we were hoping to save some money by getting rid of it.
Anyone know about the coops available for homeschoolers here?

Ugh. Don't get me started on GCI and MTA and internet! I don't personally know of any other options. It is expensive and not very good and I feel like we get ripped off at every turn. Not fun.
Sorry, not sure about the home school coop either. :/ I know of veggie and milk shares though! :)

I live in Anchorage and am feeling very trapped by GCI right now. Our bill for phone, cable, internet, 3 cell phones is $300 a month!!! Friggen sucks.

I dont' know of any Homeschool Co-ops either. Sorry.
We can't even get GCI for internet so we're stuck with MTA. It stinks to have NO other option. And we can't even get cable with either GCI or MTA. So again, stuck with satellite. I'd love to get netflix though and stream that in instead of keeping our satellite. Fustrating.

Are there ANY restrictions on chickens? Is this just in areas that don't already have covenants? I try to imagine some hillside neighborhoods having a coop in the backyard. :) Is anyone nervous about bears?
My parents have chickens and were shocked when we bought a house in a neighborhood with covenants that only allow dogs and cats (and only two at a time!). Currently, this suits us just fine, although I am hoping I don't run into issues when I try to line dry my diapers in the summer and start a compost. When our kids are older, and we feel we want a different situation, we can move.
