How to Avoid One-Sided Nursing the Second Time

I'm 39w with my second child and am wondering what I can do to avoid one-sided nursing this time. My left nipple is larger and that breast had a greater supply with DS. My nipples are the same as they were then, though perhaps supply could be different this time.

With DS (almost 2, weaned last fall), I had an over supply on the left/large size ("good" nipple side) and so I worked to correct that when he was a newborn and I think the smaller/lower supply side was neglected. He nursed every 2 hours during the day the entire time we nursed. Eventually, he refused the lower supply side and I dried up. I think I pumped for a little while to increase supply but it didn't do much. I feel like his latch was fine, but he really seemed to prefer the other side.

Now, I know it's not a *huge* deal to nurse one-sided. I don't care about being lopsided and what not. But, I feel like I could have given him more milk if he nursed from both sides.

Any tips?

I have a similar situation. My left breast has a better nipple and better supply. The right side's doesn't come out as far and still hurts sometimes. What I do is almost always start out with the right side even though DD doesn't stay on it long. I also always compress the right side so as much milk is coming out as well but don't do this with the left. They are still the same size now (although at first the left side was WAY bigger until I stated this method). I hope DD continues to nurse on the right side and I hope your next child does for you as well.

Congratulations! We were in the May DDC together!

I have a bum boob too, lefty was never as good as righty. After a while, I started starting out on lefty (unless we were in public or a hurry and I didn't want to fuss)

Have you noticed this time around your breast are going through the entire prep routine again? I was reading somewhere that you gain some breast tissue with each pregnancy. So, I'm hoping there will be an improvement in the function!
