Easter Basket Ideas?

Thread Starter

My oldest dd (7) is allergic to eggs, which means most candies (and obviously boiled Easter eggs) are not an option for Easter baskets.  We usually err on the side of some safe candy, but mostly other things - new summer hats, and/or stuffed animals (last year it was some stuffed kittens), etc.  Books also show up in the baskets sometimes....

This year they are crazy for Totoro items.  dd2 got a large Totoro for Christmas, which she loves.  She and her sister would like the "Cat Bus" and the blue and the white small totoros for Easter (egads, not spending quite that much!).... We are planning to get the two small totoros and a Totoro mouse pad.  dh has suggested that the mouse pad be for dd1, and the small totoros for dd2.  To me this seems lousy for dd1 - "just" a mouse pad, while baby sister gets all three varieties of Totoro?  But the cat bus is more than we want to spend; and buying the cat bus would just cause a fight over who gets to play with things.

SOOoooo --- I'm looking for some other ideas of things to put in the Easter basket to make up the difference for dd1.  We could go with a Totoro shirt -- but that and a mouse pad seem so "big kid" to me, and she's very much interested in stuffed animals etc. still.  We typically look for fair trade type toys, not a lot of plastic or etc.  I'm at a LOSS what to add to her basket if her sister gets both little totoros.

Any suggestions of other ideas?  She's very interested in dinosaurs, space, and history; likes science and reading too, as well as cats and horses.  She has an "Only Hearts Club" doll who sees very little play time, and a Gotz American-Girl type doll which does get some play time, but typically is more interested in duplos, legos, art, play-doh, her dinosaur models, or etc.

Why can't each girl get a small Totoro and the mouse pad be shared? Even if they come in a two pack, you could open the packaging and do it that way. I agree that it's not fair for one child to get toys and another to get something functional. A Totoro keychain?

If she's really into stuffed animals, I suggest a trip to Goodwill or Salvation Army, where they are really cheap. OK, it's not fair trade, but it is reusing. They won't have Totoros probably, but they've got some really cute things. (Ds is into penguins and most of his large, extended penguin family has come from Goodwill.)

Other ideas, since Easter is late this year -- jump rope, bubbles, sidewalk chalk or other outdoor art materials.

Do you have this book? DD LOVES it. We read it all the time and she's memorized the whole thing. Have you ever searched for Totoro on Etsy? It's dangerous, I swear. Also, this is awesome--and WAY expensive. DD got one for Christmas (and I certainly hope MIL didn't pay that much for it!). We are all big into all things Studio Ghibli over here. I could shop for Totoro stuff online all day!

DD is also expecting flip flops this Easter because she got some last year.
