Where do you milk?

We have 2 does I want to start milking. I have a milk stand that dh just built me. He thinks we should keep it in the shop, but its really sawdusty. He's going to vaccuum and sweep, but the shelves are still dusty. He didn't think it would matter as long as we didn't stir it up going in and out (ie one goat in there at a time and no kids running around). I was thinking our porch, but we still have snow and its not all that warm in the mornings (20 degrees or so these days, much warmer than the winter months, but not all that warm, really). I can start a fire first thing in the morning in the shop and its nice and toasty in 20 minutes. Anyway, any thoughts?

Well, it sounds like the shop is a good spot for the time being. Dust on shelves should not affect anything. Plus, its nice to milk with warm hands. Your goats will like it!  Just be sure to strain the milk no matter where you milk. Enjoy!

I am wondering where to milk, too.  We have a goat barn, but it's just a room, and not divided up yet inside at all.  I have a stand and was thinking about putting it up on the back porch and just milking there.  I can keep the chickens off that porch.  It's not a covered porch, though, but it's close to the goat pen.

Wow - I hadn't thought of the porch.  Our does are due to freshen any day and I expected to milk them in our garage.  However, the covered, screened back porch is closer to their overnight pasture and we JUST got a wood cookstove that is about to be installed in there.  I think it'll be perfect!  I'm afraid I'm no help to the OP - but thank you very much for helping me!  (Actually, that said - if I were the OP I'd probably milk in the shop because of the warmth.  My friend (from whom I'm buying the goats) milks in a feed room in a very old barn - lots of dust, dirt...etc...  She milks into bucket with the strainer on it - then strains again into the 1/2 gallon jar - just in case.)

Glad I could help! LOL

And thanks for the info re your friend, I think I will go ahead and milk in the shop. I've had the girls on the stand the last 2 days, and they've done fine. Tomorrow I'm going to clip them up and lock kids up tomorrow night, and go for it Thursday. Yay!

Ha!  I'm trying to think of somewhere to milk where's it's going to be COOL!  LOL!  It's already hot here.  The porch I'm thinking of is on the north side, so we should have more shade.  I was talking to dh last night about how easy/cheap it should be to cover and screen in that porch.
