Excessive fluid intake and blood sugar questions

My son is 21 months old and drinks an insane amount of fluids: he's averaging 40-50 oz a night.  For his weight (20 lbs), the recommended intake is 900ml/24 hours and he's taking in ~1500 in 10 hours.  I was concerned about diabetes, so I tested his blood sugars today.  Two hours after lunch his blood sugar was 80.  That seems low to me for a post-parandial sugar level? I'm going to keep testing him just to see what his range is, but that struck me as odd.

Any input?

MDD was just diagnosed last week with type 1 diabetes even though she has normal Blood sugar and no ketones or sugar in the urine.  Due to excessive thrist and a sweet smell to her breath, my mom, (who has experience with type 1) demanded we bring her in and get a fasting glucose along with blood work checking her insulin, C peptide levels, etc.  The glucose came back normal but the other numbers were almost non existent.  Therefore we caught it in what they call the honeymoon stage.  It was much less traumatic than her ending up in the hospital for a week.  Again, not to alarm you, but if your mama gut is telling you to check, ask your doc to run these tests.

Good luck, and hopefully all will be well.

Thank you, we will definitely take him to the doc, but I need to wait until payday since he doesn't have health insurance right now :(

And thanks for the info, I didn't know you could have diabetes with normal blood sugars!

If you have a doc you are familiar with maybe they could call in a prescription for the lab tests so you do not need to pay for an appt unless the results come back with low or nonexistent insulin levels (and hopefully that will not be the case).

That was what we did, but we got the call that we needed to come in (the worst call ever).

Oh that's a good idea, I hadn't thought of that.  I will call his doctor in the morning and ask.
