Wondering about sunprotection

Just to begin with, I don't want my children or myself to get suburned. - But, I can't help wondering, aren't all those super high sun protection creams overkill (protective factors of 60 or 80)? I feel we do need some UV radiation to stay healthy, Vitamin D is not the only aspect of it.
I'm curious about your imput. How much unprotected skin do you allow? What kind of sun protection do you opt for?

We spend 10-15 minutes outside without any protection at all-and if we are in the yard I never use it. We have lots of sun dappled shade so I don't sweat it. When I do use sunscreen at the pool or beach I never go higher than 50. It is unnecessary and what is most important is how and when you apply it.

I also really prefer to use clothing as sunscreen. So my son swims in board shorts and surf top and hat. Some clothing has built in sunscreen protection as well.

Finally we use sunglasses. Good ones-sunglasses that don't offer UV protection are actually worse than no sunglasses at all.

We try not to go outside when the sun is high.  If we are out for a long period of time, we use hats and chemical-free sunblock.  I never get anything higher than spf 30.
