9 month old biting

Thread Starter

Recently my 9 month old has begun biting my shoulder when I am holding him. He is a silly, happy boy who loves to be bounced and hugged when playing. The problem is while we are playing like this, he gets very excited and bites onto my shoulder. It has become a game to him and I think my reacting (usually with a squeal of pain) to his biting causes him to laugh and want to continue with this behavior. I know that at 9 months, discipline for such behavior with a "NO" doesnt really have any effect. I have tried ignoring it to get him to stop but it is pretty hard to do when a chunk of shoulder feels like it is being ripped off your bones. I have a fair sized tattoo that covers my shoulder, and today he took a bite out of it and it will probably leave a scar.....Any advice to satiate my little vampire?

At that age you'll probably just have to be really vigilant (ie, being super fast, lol and just pulling him away so there's nothing to bite).  The only other thing that worked for us was teaching DD to "give mama kisses" when she got really excited and looked like she was about to bite.  Occasionaly I still have to remind her and she is almost two ;) but I don't think they mean to hurt... they are just trying to show love but don't know how.
