Do we need to change our strategy?

Both our the Dr we saw for our two U/S AND our midwife are expecting our dear little one to arrive somewhere between 5-6 pounds.  Both even said that IF he arrives at 6 pounds, they'll be surprised.  They are not concerned, health-wise, but just want us to know and be prepared.

At my last MW appt last week, our MW told me that she think that instead of stocking-up on 0-3 mo clothing for the summer (July/Aug baby) we need to be purchasing Preemie clothing.

Which leads to the question my beloved and I are now wondering...do we need to have a stash of Preemie diapers?  Most of our stash is NB GMB prefolds, Kissaluvs 0 and 1s, and slew of different newborn diapers.

I was JUST about to purchase 2 of these for fun:  http://shop.thegreenbabystore.com/Itti-Bitti-Tutto-One-Size-Deluxe-Diaper-Itti-Bitti-Tutto.htm

Instead, my husband is thinking that we need to purchase a small stock of these:  http://shop.thegreenbabystore.com/Happy-Hieny-Micro-Mini-Preemie-Diapers-HH-Micro-Mini.htm

Are we over-reacting?  Should we have a small stash of Preemie diapers "just in case"?

What about the GMD prefolds in Preemie size?  Or they worthwhile and then try and find some covers?

Thank you!

DD was 6lbs, 11 oz. The next day she was 5 lbs, 11 oz. We used Thirsties OS covers and Gerber three ply prefolds for the first four weeks. We only had two covers and we washed them by hand and then hung one while she was wearing the other. However, she wasnt a pooper, so Id probably get 4 covers just in case.

My ds was 6 lbs 9 oz and we used GMD newborn size and newborn covers.  I don't remember feeling like the diaper was overwhelmingly large, but it was the first time I'd really seen a baby in prefold diapers before.  He outgrew them in 5-6 weeks.  I do remember having a bit of a time finding something in our newborn clothes that would fit him the first time I wanted to get him dressed.  And that was a week after he was born, he had gained almost a whole pound by then!  So, I'd say a couple of preemie size sleepers may come in handy.  You can always use preemie prefolds as doublers later on too.

also, I only had four covers in the beginning, and ds pooped 3-5 times a day.  4 was not enough for us.  I was way too stressed about poop leaking from the diaper onto the inside of the covers and running out of clean covers by wash day  (which was every other day).  I plan on 6 at least next time.  Maybe some with a snap down rise so that they'll grow a bit with the babe.

Thank you!

I was 5 pounds...and so that is what my mom has in her memory for judgement of size.  She remembers the nb diapers being HUGE on me!  And I wasn't a fast grower...and at the age of 29 am a whole 4 feet 9.75 inches tall!  My husband is 5'11"...but was VERY small until 10th grade.

We are planning on purchasing the NB set from GMD, some of their preemie prefolds, and are just looking for some preemie covers and AIOs.  I dont' need a TON of AIOs...but I know they'll make Grandmother happier when changing the baby.  :-)

mine arrived at 5lbs 7oz SUPER thing legs.. GMD orange edge absoultly swam on her. Thirsty covers were GIGANTIC gerber profolds flats ect were impossible to fit in any way. Kisslaluv 0 umm no too big oh and prorap preemie covers were also way to big... We used preemie prefolds and even those we folded down both back and front to fit. For covers Bummi superbrites and bummi orginals.. For convience nanabottom AIOs both preemie and NB worked though the NB did go over the cord..

Deanna,

Thank you!  And shoot!  I didn't even think of the Happy Heinys Preemie going over the cord.

This is my first little one...and I'm sorry to sound stupid...but is this going to be a HUGE issue?  Will he be miserable?

Thank you!

no you'll be fine I knew I'd CD this one right from the start and since shes ws monitered for IUGR throughout 1/2 my pregancy I knew she'd be small.... Still I planned to use both cloth and sposies at first but the sposies were too big! THe cloth fit so much better. You will have to accept a fluffy bum and yes they do grow and faster than you think. My LO is just about 13 months now but only 18lbs so shes a mini one but shes was still out of her preemie stash by 2 months. and she could do both preemie /NB at around 6 weeks.

FWIW here is a bunch of photos of my LO in her first few months with various CDs both ones that fit and ones tham swam....
