My OB is recommending a fetal echocardiogram later in pregnancy (after 20 weeks, I believe). She isn't big on extra tests, but strongly encouraged this one to detect any heart defects due to the whole diabetes thing. Having had several friends with children with major heart defects, I've seen the extreme strain when it is a surprise and how those who have been prepared for it were able to respond, I want the test so I can emotionally prepare for things if the baby is to need surgury or intensive medical services.
I was just wondering what experiences have been with fetal echocardiograms? Is it something that they will give immediate feedback on or will we have to wait for results? How long did it take?
