Nothing to be seen ....:(

Hi,

I am totally thrilled to be pregnant again. Yesterday I went to my doctor, and he did an ultrasound and did not see anything like tiny baby anywhere. I am a bit worried now, I am quite early, just 4 weeks and 4 days, but when did they see your little ones?

And anybody where the baby kind of disappeard or extrauterine?

I am a bit frightened now....

I'm surprised he even bothered to ultrasound that early! I've never had a super-early scan, but heard plenty of anecdotes of "invisible" babies at 5 weeks plus. I don't think you need to worry for a few weeks yet. :)

Hi,

he did even do lab works for Ăź-hcg. I would have thought, yeah to early, so we just wait, but him doing labs and stuff and scheduling the next us for monday made me worried, too. Maybe I am just a bit hysterical - which might be a good sign ...

I had a scan at 5w2d due to bleeding and we were able to see the baby but not detect a heartbeat yet. I went back at 6w and we were able to see the heartbeat. I think 4w4d is too soon to see the baby.

I agree.. way to early for an u/s.  Usually they wait until at least 6 weeks (where you'll see a yolk sack, probably the fetal pole, and possibly a slow heart beat), but more commonly 8-9 so that a strong heart beat is clearly visible.  Comparing beta levels will show you how quickly your hCG is rising, indicating a healthy pregnancy or not, but the levels themselves won't confirm dates as they are highly, highly variable.

Don´t worry , you are WAY too early to be afraid . Sometimes , if you are lucky , you can see a little black dot on the screen with a vaginal US , but generally , at this point , you can´t .

As a matter of fact , my doctor checked my baby , when I was 11 week with a transabdominal US and she could see her move and see the heart beat and everything , but when she did the vaginal to be able to measure her better , she could not find her AT ALL

She was a bit puzzled by that , but then she said , sometimes they are so snuggled up in there , that they just cannot be spotted . So , don´t worry , if everything else is fine , just give it a couple of weeks

thank you soooo much for your encouragement, all of you. I´ll try not to be worried.

He did the hcg think to check for levels, he said from a certain level the baby should be detectable... I´ll keep you updated!

IMO this is the biggest problem with prenatal testing- giving you inaccurate information and causing unnecessary worry.  Why did your OB do a 4w u/s?  It makes no sense unless you suspected you were farther along?  With the hCG levels, again, your doctor is not giving you good information.  It is a very risky thing to say that at a certain level the baby should be detectable.  Beta levels are extremely variable.  Check out this site: http://www.betabase.info/showBasicChart.php?type=Single.  You can see the median levels at different dpo (days past ovulation), but notice the highest and lowest levels listed as well.  Let's say you tested at 10,000.  This is a high level, which one could assume meant you were 5-6 weeks along and therefore something should be seen in an u/s.  But you could also test that high much earlier, like you'll notice some women did at only 3-4 weeks along.  I had my level tested at 23 dpo and it was 22,480!  Notice the median is only 2,450!  So please try not to worry about all these numbers and definitely start questioning what your doctor is doing.  You deserve good answers and you have the right to say you don't want testing or u/s until later or even at all.

I had one at 5w (receptionist set it up thinking I was farthur along) and all that was there was a yolk sac.  Went back at 7 weeks and there was a tiny beating bean then 9 weeks was my little "Nemo".  I wouldn't worry about it at this point as long as your numbers are climbing accordingly.

You won't see anything on an u/s until your betas hcg is around 1500... I had an u/s at 4w6d and we just barely saw ablack dot, so I'm not surprised you didn't see anything yet. I wouldn't be worried in the least!

Hi,

please think of me (us) and maybe pray, if you are into praying :) - I´ll have my next appointment in a couple of hours, and I am soooo afraid that something is wrong....

Thank you so much for your encouragement, it really did help a lot!

Everything is just fine!

My doctor was really surprised that I was worried, he was like: yeah, if you don´t see anything, you cannot really tell, but no reason to worry!

I was so much worrying! I did not sleep last night. Now I can worry about the developing baby and the heartbeat ;)

(Maybe I just worry too much?)

Thanks again, girls, I did not know all this!

(and he did not even check the hcg level results, and I forgot to ask after seeing the yolk sac (and it doesn´t really matter anymore)

Yay!!!  Congrats mama!!  How far along did the u/s say you are?

Exactly as my calculation: 5 weeks and 2 days. I am sooo relieved!joy.gif

I am so glad for you!  They didn't see anything on my 6-week u/s and told me I had a 90% chance of miscarrying (or rather, of simply miscarrying an empty sac).  But look at me now!  Due 8/2!  Silly doctors...why do they put us through this?  I say we should ban all ultrasounds before 7 weeks...or 8 weeks!

Told ya so. :p I hope the rest of your pregnancy is pleasingly boring!

Personally, I would look into a different care provider if you have other options.  He doesn't sound very in tune with you and your feelings!  Of course you're going to worry!

Thanks everybody,

maurine; I so agree with you! I am actually thinking about just not having an ultrasound again!

Jaimee, he is a quite nice guy, but a man. And he is quite good at his job, he has not a lot of empathy, but, he is a man :) The problem is, that he sees me more as a collague than a pregnant woman. the primary care wĂll be done by a midwife anyway. He is just supposed to do the ultrasounds (and not to many of them!)
