My dh may be getting a job in Carpinteria, however, I am finding that the housing prices are way above our limits. I want to live in the mountains and have some land. Do you think that we could possible afford something like that? Are there houses for sale in Los Padres National Forest? Would you recommend a home in a town like Meiners Oaks or Mira Monte? I just don't know these areas at all, so it is hard for me to get a good idea of what its like. Thanks for the help!
Might be getting a job in Carpinteria, CA; where to live around there?
You're right...Carpinteria, Montecito, and Santa Barbara will probably not offer very many affordable housing options, but all are really great communities. You may want to check out Ojai -- it's an intimate community that is more inland, but an easy drive to the ocean/Carpinteria. I've also had friends who have lived in Santa Paula and have liked it, but I can't speak about it personally. Also Ventura tends to be more affordable, but you have to be more careful about the areas in Ventura.
Hi, subbing to this thread because we are considering the area as well. I am curious about Ojai. What are schools like up there? I wonder if there is a good homeschooling community in the area.
Is a commute from Ojai to Ventura possible? Mapquest said 25 minutes, but ya never know unless you live there!
I don't live in Ojai, but I have been involved in the spiritual community there for the past 3ish years. Ojai is a very easy commute to Ventura -- the drive is mostly on small highways with the exception of the 101, but I've never hit traffic between Ojai and Ventura, and it's a pretty drive through rolling hills. I don't know much about the homeschooling community in Ojai, but I'm willing to bet that it is active and thriving. From what I've observed, it's a very grounded, compassionate community with a lot of alternative lifestyles.
There are many homeschoolers in Ojai, Ventura, and Ventura County :-)
Here are a couple groups to check out:
Happy to answer questions about these groups and the area, from the perspective of a homeschooler who's lived here nearly 9 years and has been homeschooling all along.
Bumping this thread. Ojai has always been a dream of ours, although we have never even been. That being said, the job dh is applying for is in Ventura. Someone mentioned above that "you have to be careful" when looking for areas to live in. Does this mean they are dangerous? Or run down? And what are good parts of Ventura when looking at a map.
Thanks everyone! I am so envious of your beach living :-)
