First tooth messing everything up

Thread Starter

My little guy (who is 7 months old), after teething for eleven years four months, finally has the jagged edge of his first tooth poking through his gums...and suddenly, I have a blocked duct and really sore nipples! All the advice I could find on KellyMom was about BFing toddlers (with lots of teeth) or dealing with TOP teeth. This is a bottom tooth. Is it possible for the bottom tooth (which isn't even all the way in yet, just the sharp little edge) to be messing things up this badly? He's not biting me, he's definitely nursing, but it suddenly hurts. The blocked duct tells me that maybe he's not nursing as effectively as usual. He's still working on the other bottom front tooth, so wants to nurse for comfort A LOT. I wouldn't mind...except it really hurts, and also the stimulation can't be helping that duct situation.

Did this happen to anyone else? Does anyone have any advice for me? I'm using warm compresses and massage to try to deal with the blocked duct--I might also pump a bit in case it's a problem with ineffective nursing.

Oh, and his latch still LOOKS fine from the outside. It just doesn't feel right.

Sometimes the bottom teeth will mess with their latch because they are trying to not allow their tounge to rub on the sore gums/new tooth. So it could be a latch issue. Not sure what you can do about it, however. Do you have a local LLL you could go to for help?
