How to examine poop?

My DD swallowed a small battery or magnet or both (I know, very scary) yesterday. We've been to the Dr and the ER, and it seems to already be one thing (not two) and in the intestines so the biggest threats are gone.  They sent us home and said it should pass (but if she gets sick come back).

Anyway, I'm supposed to examine her poop, and I'm wondering if anyone has advice on how to do this exactly??

She is 3.5 and uses a small potty, so it goes in a little bowl. I don't have gloves, but I was thinking of using some disposable chopsticks.  She didn't poop at all today, which was frustrating.  I'm hoping she will tomorrow morning.  Obviously, I'll feel much better when it's out of her.

I'd buy disposable gloves and use those.  Something that small may not be obvious at first glance.  My DS swallowed a penny and I had check his diaper pretty thoroughly until it passed.  I've also heard of putting the poop in a strainer and running hot water over it.  That just seemed a little too icky to me though.
