slightly off topic? animal vaccinations

i live in new york and am suupposed to be vaccinating my cats for rabies/distemper. before my dd was born i went every year but before then i also blindly vaccinated my son too :( now that i've learned more about vaxing i'm torn on this. my cats are indoor so i don't see them being exposed to rabies (we have had a bat in the house, once years ago) so what would you do/have done about your pets?

I used to vaccinate my cats too when I was young and had no clue what vaccines were made of.   I no longer get them vaccinated.  They are indoor cats.  If they are indoor, I don't see them at any risk for anything.

I mentioned this in another thread...I have three cats...my oldest cat is 13 and for most of his life, he had all of the routine annual shots (again, until I became aware a few years ago), my middle cat has had some, and my youngest, only the first shots.  My oldest has diabetes and I have to give him insulin twice a day. The other two are very healthy.  I have no idea what caused the diabetes in my oldest as he could have been predisposed to it anyway, but you can never be quite sure. I can't see myself subjecting them to that again, knowing what I know now. For heaven's sake, I'm even terribly careful about the food they eat anymore since there are tons of by-products in themsmile.gif

I do get my cats a rabies dose because I have to show proof in order to get them spayed/neutered. But then that's it. I would certainly say to consult the laws in your area so you know what you're dealing with.

they talk about this from time to time in the Pet forum here on MDC, you might look there for more input
