Hysterosalpingogram?

Has anyone had one of these? If so, what was it like and did the doc find anything?

Hi!  I have had a HSG.  I had to go to the hospital radiology department to have mine done as an outpatient.  Basically, it was kind of like a pap smear, but it took a little longer and it was a little painful.  The painful part didn't last long at all (maybe, 8 seconds) and once it was over, it was over -  I didn't have any lingering pain or anything.  I had a blocked tube, and the HSG cleared it out, so the doc said that is why it hurt.  The whole procedure took about 20 minutes.  You don't have to have an IV or anything.  Once it was finished, I went to the bathroom, most of the contrast dye came out (it was clear and oily feeling), I put on a pad to protect my clothes, and I went home.  Oh, I could watch the dye going through my uterus and tubes in real time on the screen, so that was interesting.

I haven't had mine done yet. My doctor prescribes a valium to take beforehand. I am wondering if this is unusual. I have read elsewhere that women take an ibuprofen to deal with the pain.

A friend of mine had one of those and she said it was incredibly painful. She talked about it on her blog here: http://theprettysmitties.wordpress.com/2011/03/19/infertility/
