To beta test or not to beta test?

I just got a BFP last week and am thrilled. I've taken 3 hpts on 16, 18, and 20 dpo and they are all are positive and wonderfully going in the unmistakably darker direction.

The nurse at the RE's office where I've gone is totally convinced I should have a beta test next week. I have some risk factor because I am 44 and have had 2 previous late first trimester losses. But, the last m/c wasn't caught with the beta test and I doubt the first one would have been.

As near as I can tell the main reason to take the beta test is to reduce the stress of wondering if the pg is okay. But, the hpts are doing a good job of that and the time, money, and bruising I usually get with these tests all make the beta tests not exactly low-stress.

The other reason to do it that I understand is to see if I "need to be watched closely," but I think I "need" to be watched closely anyway--ie I'll probably get an early ultrasound, which caught sad result of m/c #2 and would have caught it for m/c #1, I believe.

So I'm really not seeing the up side of doing this, and my internet searching isn't revealing any. Is there something I'm missing?

Not that I'm aware of... the tests are simply going to tell if if your hCG is increasing at a normal rate, indicating a healthy pregnancy for now.  The levels themselves can't tell you much since they are highly, highly variable.  I personally would not bother with it, especially since you plan on having an early u/s in a few weeks.  A strong beating heart is a much better indicator of a healthy pregnancy than your beta levels.

Good luck and sending sticky vibes your way!  goodvibes.gif

Thanks Jaimee. I'm realizing the question I might ask the nurse is will the beta test me anything that the early u/s won't.

I probably wouldn't bother if your tests are getting darker - that means your hcg is increasing. Just wait another week or 2 for the ultrasound. I abhore going to the lab and having those tests done!I did have mine done last week and it helped reassure me a bit - but I had a chemical pregnancy a few months ago. So a very early loss. I am still nervous as heck though.
