ETA: Out of curiosity I used google to search the appearance of these terms on MDC. Here's what I got:

Mama (404k times)
Mom (380k)
Mother (221k)
Mommy (199k)
Mum (81.5k)
Mamma (77k)
Mummy (68.2k)
Maman (46.3k)

previous polls:

Who is handling your care?

Where are you birthing?

How long were you TTC?

How many children including this one (these two)?

Your age when the first was/is born?

How old are you?

I responded in the poll (I am maman), but wanted to post also how much I enjoy these regular polls! love.gif

I posted mommy but depending on the age I can be mama and wouldn't be surprised if my oldest (almost 9) starts calling me mom soon.

Starts out mama, preteen years I hear, "Moooom!!"(usually in an offended or embarassed tone) and my 15 year old calls me "Mommy" when she wants to butter me up LOL. Mama is very typical in my area, even adults tend to call their mothers "mama".

I have two, my youngest calls me "mama" and  my oldest usually calls me "mommy" although she switches back and forth. Mama is the Dutch word for mommy.

I don't know yet!

DS was calling me Mama, but has now switched to Mommy.

We're tentatively planning for me to be mama and my wife to be mommy, but we'll see what actually ends up happening. orngbiggrin.gif

I started out as Mama...then DS switched to Mommy...and now I'm usually Mommy, but sometimes Mom (and sometimes still Mama).

In formulating the question, I did a quick search and found that Mama or a variation of it is used in a lot of languages.

Dutch - mama
French - maman
German - Mama
Greek - μαμά
Italian - mamma
Portuguese - mamã
Russian - мама
Spanish - mamá

Do your children speak Dutch?

This. My two switch back and forth between "mama" and "mama", but the vast majority of the time, I'm mama.

My ds has always called me Mom. My dd started out calling me Mommy but she mostly calls me Mom now. I probably would have preferred Mama, but no takers.

They don't speak much of it unfortunately, but they do understand me pretty well. I am the only Dutch influence in their lives and it's just not possible to compete with all the English that surrounds them 24/7.

Side note: isn't it funny that all those words for mommy directly relate to the Latin word for boob? I love that!

I'm surprised to see I'm the only vote for mom so far. I was mama till DS was about 3.5. It will be interesting to hear what the new baby calls me. I'd like to have a stint as a mama again, but with DS's lead I could be mom from the start.

I voted Mama but DD calls me Mama, mom, and mommy. She even tried out Mother (moder) for a while while we had Are you my Mother out from the library! Ha! Mostly its Mama though and that's what I like. DH is Papa.

DS calls me "mama" most of the time. Sometimes a "mom" or "mommy" slips in there, but we'll stick with mama as long as possible!

I am mainly mama, but can be called mom sometimes, and dh is always papa, never dad or daddy. My lil girl also calls me dudio??? and "little mama" lol.

I started as mama when ds was just starting to talk but now I am solidly mommy. Very recently he has been playing around with mom & even my first name. Dh is papa but ds has also been playing around with daddy which is funny 'cause it's not a term we EVER use.

I'm Eema around here. That's hebrew for mother.

Dd calls me mom, ds is usually mommy or mama if he's tired.
