need delayed vaccine friendly pediatrician Kansas City MO

Thread Starter

I just took my son in for his 12 month check up and explained I was not ready to give him the MMR and Chickenpox vaccine. In the past month he was on two different antibiotics for two weeks for ear and eye infections, then steroids for croup, and I just don't feel his immune system could be ready. Also he is only in the 3rd percentile for weight so my gut is telling me I need to delay these ones and I will not ignore my mother instinct. My pediatrician told me that if I did not get the vaccinations on schedule I would no longer be welcome at their office because I am putting my child's life at risk.

I need a delayed vaccine pediatrician in the North Kansas City MO area or Kansas City MO area. I have seen previous threads for the KS side, but my insurance will only work in MO (mo medicaid).

Help! My friends here all think I should do everything the dr says and I have no one else to turn to for a ped recommendation.

Hey, I was curious if you were able to find one?  I too am looking for the same thing.

I switched our family to Dr. Douglas Brooks at Town Plaza Family Practice, 5701 West 119th Street, Overland Park, KS 66209-3721

(913) 345-3650 .  I found his name on Dr. Sears' website under vaccine-"friendly" peds, meaning open to discussion with parents.  Our prev. ped threatened to kick us out of his practice if we did not go with the recommended vax schedule.  We do vaccines, but I wanted a doc who was more open-minded, and more willing to work with parents.  At my 3yo's check the other day, he recommended a homeopathic supplement, which impressed me.  We have to drive a little to get to him, but it's worth it to me.  Good luck! ‎

Oh!  Sorry, I just re-read your post, and realized my info doesn't help you since it's in KS.  Try checking Dr. Sears' website.

It took forever to find my pediatrician. I was originally going for no vaccines but DH and I butted heads against that idea plus I couldn't find a pediatrician that would agree on that. I used to go to Priority Care Pediatrics but they have a policy that all children MUST follow the CDC schedule. I got kicked out. It took me about 4 months to find someone who was willing to take new patients but even she ONLY allowed the CDC schedule but because DS hadn't seen a pediatrician (he didn't go to well-baby checkups) that would see him, he had to be taken to Children's Mercy for failure to thrive. He was off the weight gain charts. Children's Mercy was very compliant with my "naturopathic" ways and now I am following up with a pediatrician with the Children's Mercy Clinic on Broadway. She only wanted to know why I wanted to do the delayed schedule. I gave her my reason and she was okay with it. Every time I go in  for a well-baby checkup, she will ask if I want him to be vaccinated at this time or not. If not, she is okay with it. The nurses there will give you the "speech", but we just agree to disagree. Oh, her name is Dr. Goodenburger.  I am on Medicaid and living in the North Kansas City area.

Hi we are moving to KC from Washington DC where we have a fabulous pediatrician. I just wanted to thank you for posting this because we are so nervous moving where we know no one and nothing and at least now we have a pediatrician we can call!

No problem. :) I know how moving goes. It is nerve-wrecking. I moved about ten times in my life. I hope your move goes smoothly!

I'm in North KC too, and also got booted from Priority Care Pediatrics. DD hasn't been to a doc since and I'm tracking her weight and height at home. I'd like to get her a well-baby checkup though (no shots). Did you take your babe to Children's Mercy on Barry Road or Downtown?

I take him to the downtown one.

I am so happy I came across this thread.  We recently moved to KC from Virgina and I had my DS on a delayed schedule (he just turned one in June!).  Our pedi was at one of those vaccine pushing offices, but thank God they agreed to work with me.  When we got here and I started researching pedi's in our insurance I found most offices out here also have a vaccine policy that basically says do it or go elsewhere.  I have an appointment with a pedi this Tuesday for my son's 1 year check up and I'm hoping that since I didn't find anything on their website about a vaccine policy that he will be willing to work us as well.  If not, I'm very thankful for the name of a pedi who is willing to work with parents.  Hopefully he's in my insurance :)

If anyone has any suggestions for the Missouri side of KC, I am looking for a vaccine friendly ped for my daughter.  Please help!!! :)

We see Dr. Darren Killen in KCMO, in Brookside. We just started in April so we've only seen him a couple times, but he has been great. He's a family doc, not a ped, but I wanted one doctor for all of us. His number is 816-523-9355.

HTH!
