When is a baby ready for a cheap umbrella stroller?

I have a decent stroller now, bit never use it and plan to sell it along with the car seat it came with and then get a cheap umbrella stroller. Right now I don't use the stroller at all, I used it about 4 times in the last 6 months. I wear him, but he's getting so heavy I'm wanting to use the stroller now I think. I'm also going on a trip using the airplane and would like to buy a cheap umbrella stroller to use for it. It will be easier to use and stow then the one I have now and when we're back it will be easier to get up and down my apartment stairs as well.

They don't have much support at all though. So when is a baby ready for these strollers? He's now 6 1/2 months and weighs almost 20 pounds and can sit up really well in his high chair and is just learning to sit on his own on the floor.

If he can sit up in a high chair and is almost sitting up on his own, he is probably ready. Best advice I got for umbrella strollers is don't scrimp and get the cheapest one possible. If  you are tall, get one that has higher handles - it will be MUCH easier on your back. Most of them don't have baskets underneath but some have little basket type bags on the back hanging off the handles.

I love my Maclaren stroller (yeah, the one that got recalled for amputating fingers).  For real, it drives like a dream.  We started DS in it for the same reason - an airplane trip - at just under 5 months.  I reclined it all the way and he seemed fine to me.  I'm sure someone will tell you that's wrong, but oh well...
