Questioning Pediatrician's Recommendation

Today at our 6 month appointment with DD, our pedatrician said that DD should be eating three solid-food meals a day which will cause her to cut back significantly on breastfeeding. When do we really need to start three solid-food meals a day?

Absolutely not!!!! Not at 6 months! I didn't even introduce solids before 7 months! My son is 11 months old and most days doesn't even eat more than bites of an apple and some puffs and occasionally yogurt and RARELY bites from what I'm eating. Breastmilk is the only necessity until after a year. Food before one is just for fun!!

Exactly what I thought. Thanks for reaffirming this for me!

Ah yes, this sounds like the case of another well-meaning but ignorant to breastfeeding pediatrician.

The PP is correct, before 12 months nursing comes before solids, and solids are for fun, taste and texture. Even at a year only up to 25% of nutrition is expected from solids.

Check out kellymom for great info!

ps Great instincts, Mama! Keep it up! orngbiggrin.gif

Those recommendation's don't even reflect the conservative APA's stance on solids. Solids are introduced after 6 months and nursing is primary food for first year.

Have fun with the solids but they are just, just for fun right now.
