washing kefir grains!

I got some milk kefir grains in the mail today and immediately rinsed them with filtered water (we have a reverse osmosis machine) before putting them in fresh milk. But i've just been reading about how you should never wash kefir grains as it removes the protective slimy layer or something! Have i ruined the grains? Are they  pretty much dead now ? :/

Nah they're fine. I do it all the time. I even sometimes make water kefir (yes you can convert some of your dairy grains) and let them sit in filtered water. My (and probably most grains) and pretty tough. I accidently froze mine in the fridge the other day when my son turned the temp down.

I don't wash my milk grains out of laziness, but I do wash my water kefir grains when they're not performing as well to sort of "wake them up". I don't think it will harm them at all unless you used super super hot water or soap, which it doesn't sound like you did. I think they'll be fine!

I just saw this post today on how to make water kefir and it doesn't say anything about rinsing the grains before making more. I think I'm going to give it a shot though! Hope I don't ruin them...I can't see how I will.  Does this look like a pretty good tutorial on how to make water kefir?

This is how I make my water kefir. I like the two step fermentation process so that I don't have to wait for the next batch of flavored kefir water to be ready since the water kefir batch is always brewing. Also, this way the water kefir grains don't get contaminated with whatever "flavor" I've decided to experiment with.  Enjoy!  (I'm sipping on a glass of bubbly blueberry water kefir right now yummy.gif)
