6 month old, ear infection...antibiotics??

My youngest dd has been sick with a cough/cold for about 2 weeks, but was on the mend. I took her for her well visit yesterday and the doc said her right ear was infected and prescribed antibiotics. At that point she had no fever, pain or fussiness, so I decided to wait on the meds.
Began treating with garlic oil and bm,  alternating these in the ear every few hours. She has become fussier today, so I'm also giving motrin. She woke up from a nap around the time her motrin wore off today and was clearly uncomfortable. I dosed her again and she is better.

I am wondering at what point would anitbiotics be needed if at all? How long does it take with using natural treatments to clear up an ear infection? Has anyone just treated for the pain and let the infection run its course? I don't think it's bacterial since she doesn't have a fever.

Any help would be greatly appriciated! This is my 3rd lo, but first ear infection, so Im a little clueless :(

you could call in and ask for a Rx for those ear numbing drops..   my kids have only had 2 ear infections.. (total, for all 3 of them) so i'm no expert i usually refer to the Dr Sears website for this sort of issue..

Thanks! She slept fine last night without any motrin and woke up happy, so I think she'll be ok. I guess bm and garlic oil did the trick
