How do I get her to stop pinching me????

My 1 year old recently adopted this awful habit of kneading the underside of my arm with her tight little pinchy grasp whenever I carry her on my hip.  It hurts - a LOT, and I have baby finger bruises on my arm from elbow to armpit.  Whenever I have a free hand I remove her hand from my arm and say "No - that hurts mommy," but I don't think she understands what exactly it is that I want her to stop doing.  In fact, I don't even think she's conscious that she's doing it.  It's driving me nuts.  How do I get her to stop???

If you find a solution, I'd love to hear it. My one year old does this too. Nail length doesn't matter, though it hurts more if I don't keep them well trimmed and filed. And like you said, it's totally not a conscious thing. I think I might have to start wearing armor on my arms!

Argh - looks like it might be one of those age-related things that we just have to wait out.  Maybe arm armor (arm-or winky.gif) IS the way to go...

My 1 year old does the same thing. Recently she does it on my chest when she wants to nurse. Ow!

I set her down whenever she does it and say 'no' gently but firmly....  I will let you know if it works.

Wow, I'd love to hear some solutions too- my 3.5 month old is already doing this to me when he nurses! His one free hand that is away from my body is always groping around for something to grasp, and it seems his favorite spot is my upper arm. It hurts because he pinches as well. I do a similar thing as the OP- remove his hand, tell him "no, that hurts mommy" or something like that, and in 5 seconds, his little hand is back again. He's 3.5 mos old so I can't be shocked that he doesn't understand. Anyway, I feel your pain (literally). I've looked into nursing necklaces but don't love the way they look. Not sure of anything you could offer her when you carry her on your hip that would give her a distraction/something to grasp onto instead? (similar concept of a nursing necklace?)....

oh man, my one year old just started pinching me HARD on the chest while he's going to to sleep. What the frick?!  First it was high on my chest and left me with literal gouges taken out of my skin and then he graduated to pinching the top of my breast as hard as he can.  I tell him no and he gets so mad at me.  My only recourse is to wear really high necked shirts when I'm putting him to bed.

I put mine down when they did that. "ow - you hurt me" and just put them down.
