I just signed on my land!!!

I've been waiting until the contract was finalized to announce it here at MDC, but DH and I are now proud property owners of 11 perfect acres!!!

We moved out here about two years ago and have been renting an old general store and living in the apartment in the back. We've been eyeing the property across the street since we got here and about 6 months ago our landlord and the owner of the farm approached us and said that we could work out an arrangement that allowed us to buy the land (he had previously been very firm about the fact that NONE of the 700 acres he has are for sale.) He and his wife are in their 90's and were having a hard time cooking for themselves, so they told me that if I cooked two meals a day, 5 days a week,  then they would pay me $500 a month, plus they would sell us the land we'd asked about, and they would have the mortgage go through them instead of a bank. This was perfect for me, as Im an ex-chef turned stay at home mom, and its only about three quarters of a mile down the road. I pop the babe in a sling and walk there sometimes. They arent the nicest people in the world to work for, but hey, they are OLD and he is really interesting (he's an ex CIA agent and was the president of Air America working undercover for 40 years...good stories). Regardless, we signed all the papers after 6 months of lawyers and first drafts, and blah blah blah, WE HAVE OUR LAND!!!!!

Also, we signed a 20 year lease on the general store.

We have hills, forest, flat land, and creek. We have plans to plant an orchard, run a small scale nursery, make a pond, and so, so, many other things. Weve been looking at it across the street for a long time.

Oh, and the main purpose is because we are building a house. We've almost completed the design. Our hope is to have it be timber framed with straw bale side walls and cobbed corners.

Be prepared for lots of questions and me begging for your advice!!! Thanks for letting me brag!

Wow what a deal.  Congratulations!  I'm just so happy for you as it really does sound like a sweet set up.  And cranky or not, I bet they are glad to have you there.  I'm sure it's nice for them that they have someone they can depend on now.

Congratulations!!!  How exciting!  We moved to 5 acres in the middle of nowhere a month ago, so we're in the same boat.  I love it, though!
