Is this vaccine contagious?  I have a 2 week old at home...not sure if I wanted her coming here to help with baby...

Thanks!

I'm not usually one to worry about germs, but a 2 week old baby having close contact with someone recently vaccinated for shingles would concern me. What unfortunate timing. But on the other hand, if you had natural chickenpox instead of the vaccine, your baby may still be protected from the antibodies she was exposed to in the womb.

The shingles vaccine package insert says, "Transmission of vaccine virus may occur between vaccinees and susceptible contacts." http://www.fda.gov/downloads/BiologicsBloodVaccines/Vaccines/ApprovedProducts/UCM132831.pdf page 3.

The shingles vaccine is also 14 time stronger than the chickenpox vaccine. 19,400 plaque forming units of varicella virus vs. 1,350 for the chickenpox vaccine.

I would not allow contact with the baby.   It sheds so I would say 21 days before I would feel comfortable with contact ( physical) with the baby.

She can put off her vaccine or put off touching/ close contact with the baby
