UC PPH solutions?

I had a substantial postpartum hemorrhage after last baby, though it was probably because of my anterior placenta that didnt detatch all the way and hung there out of me for 10 or more mins by a doime size area left hanging on and maybe it pulled a little and caused the bleeding.  So, having PPH this time around may be no issue at all but after having it happen Id love to have something "just in case".

Midwife I had last time gave me two shots of pit and a cytotec suppository which finally did the trick and I didn't even get really ill and felt almost normal again within two days as far as weakness from bloodloss goes.

Now I have heard that UC mamas can get their hands on these things but I have no clue how.

Does anyone know if either of those things can be obtained by a lay person and if not can anyone suggest something they have had to use before that worked well?  I know there are lots of tinctures out there like "hem halt" and other single herbs like shepards purse, and stuff but not sure works and what doesn't.  Perhaps I need something for retained placenta as well.  After all, if it comes down to it, I wouldn't think twice about ingesting a little raw placenta to stop bleeding but if it isn't out, that may be hard, lol.

There are herbs such as Angelica, Dong Quai, Motherwort, and Shepherd's Purse that can help with PPH, and eating the placenta can help, too. I don't know where a layperson would obtain pit or Cytotec though.

You can order cytotec, misoprostol from certain overseas pharmacies.

I had never heard of this before, but I just my first visit with my wonderful ND (who also was a mw, and has had UCs of her own) and she told me about this Chinese herb called Yunnan Paiyao/Baiyao that stops bleeding immediately. It's been used for centuries on battlefields and such to stop internal and external bleeding. She said it works in seconds and can be taken with abruption as well. You can get it on Amazon for quite cheap. She said two capsules in water and drink it. I'm planning on getting some asap.

Also it helps to get babybreastfeeding ASAP. Breastfeeding causes the release of prolactin and oxytocin. Oxytocin is a hormone that causes uterine contractions. The release of oxytocin while breastfeeding speeds uterine involution. Reducing the chance of PPH.

Wow, I have never heard of this before.  I have been looking it up and it's uses.  Seemed to have a lot of success stories the few articles from midwives overseas I have found.  CAn't find much use in the US.  Amazon has great reviews as well but it is mostly used on pets.  Can't find any reviews of anyone who used it internally on themselves.  A few used it on external bleeding with success.  At that price it seems worth it to have on hand and if it came down to it and I was in trouble, it would be worth I I think to take.  Thanks for mentioning that, it is now on my birth supplies list.

You're welcome! I was excited to find out about it as well, and ordered some from Amazon already:)
I meant to mention that she's used it almost exclusively when she practiced midwifery and only had to use pitocin once. She practiced for several years, so that seems pretty good!

There is a local midwife who uses yunnan paiyao for bleeds even though she is licensed to carry legend drugs. I'll say that when I was pregnant with my first that's what I had on hand because my hubby likes Chinese herbs and it was in the house anyway. But now I've read enough that I just can't get behind patent Chinese medicines. Bulk herbs from a trusted source are one thing, but I don't trust anything bottled in pill form coming out of China. It's my understanding that Yunnan paiyao is predominantly Angelica anyway.

I got my yunnan baiyao in today, and here are the ingredients listed greatest to smallest quantity:

Radix notoginsing  200mg

Ajuga forrestii diels 85mg (#5 on the list)

rhizoma dioscoreae 66.5mg

rhizoma dioscoreae nipponicae  57.5mg (all of these listed so far are mentioned in this link for helping Menorrhagia)

herba geranii & herba erodii 36mg

dioscoreae parviflora ting 30mg
herba inulae cappae 25mg
(could not find info on these last two herbs, but they are native to Yunnan Province apparently. They are not Dong Quai/Angelica)

(links take you to whatever info I could find on the herb, it's uses, etc)

Here is a brief explanantion of Yunnan Baiyao/Paiyao and it's origin.

It does not contain Angelica/Dong Quai. Also, you can get it in powder form:)

Hmmmmm, Scratch the angelica then. I couldn't find any Yunnan paiyao with Angelica in it either. I can't remember now why I thought that. The only reference I found in a quick online search was in a midwifery today article by Robin Lim......maybe that was why.

Anyhoo, I do still think the heavy metal contamination in Chinese medicines is something to think about. smile.gif

I haven't heard about that. Do you have info on it you wouldn't mind sharing? smile.gif
