Am I going too fast? Working with textbooks AND workbooks

So...I finally broke down and started doing more seatwork with the kids. I just purchased Singapore math...but I'm not sure if I'm doing the right amount each day.

Do you do the textbook and workbook each day? Or...do you do the textbook one day a week and work on corresponding pages in the workbook for the other days? I'm also trying to figure this out with Explode the Code. It feels that my kids are supposed to do 5 to 10 pages of workbook pages for each teacher's pages I see.

I hope this is making sense...I'd love to know anyone's thought! Thanks!

If your kid is finishing the day's work feeling like she's accomplished something but almost wants to do a bit more, that's the right amount in my opinion. We've used Singapore Math for years with four different kids. We've never used the textbooks. Our pace with the workbooks has been anywhere from one exercise every few weeks to three to five exercises a day. It depends whether the kids are finding it easy, or struggling with concepts or motivation, in which case we usually focus on other things for a while and come back to it. Overall I'd say we've averaged about 4 exercises a week. At that pace we get through a year's worth of curriculum in about 8 months.

We don't use Singapore anymore, but when we did, we also skipped the text entirely and just used the workbook.  We would usually do 3-4 exercises a day.  It was not appropriate for ds1, which is why we went fast and also why we stopped (too much practice for him.)

I wonder if you should have been using a more advanced grade level than you were? Three or four exercises a day would have a year completed in less than a couple of months, so eventually you might have caught up to a level that challenged him. But I guess you've found something else anyway. I'm curious what you're using, because I'm looking for something for my 8-year-old who will soon be finished Primary Math (there's another thread here somewhere where I was asking).

Yes, it was too easy, but at the time, I thought it important that he learn the math facts.  He has shown me that he doesn't care to memorize basic math facts and prefers to work on algebra problems.  Pretty soon he is going to figure out that it would all be more fun if he just had basic facts memorized.  Anyhoo, we are doing the EPGY open enrollment math.

Thanks. We need something that's not on-line or EPGY would be perfect. Oh well.
