We had our first "OMG she's really hurt accident!"

Today DD was outside playing with us while DH and I worked on the yard and did the burn pile. Several trees actually fell this winter and we working on clearing them up. The dog (our very loving gentle, great with DD dog) was outside with us as well and at once point I am up the hill raking and DH is near DD and the dog.

The dog is yanking on a branch that is attached to a downed tree and she is pulling as hard as she can. DD is standing on the other side of the branch laughing and I see this happening realizing the disaster about to unfold. I SCREAM at DH in panic "SEAN SEAN BABY!" He turns and looks at DD and WHAM!

The dog thinking she did something wrong because I yelled to DH lets go of the branch and it SLAMS DD full in the face literally lifting her off her feet and launching her straight back about 4 feet onto her back. I was already running down anyway and DH gets their first. She is bleeding all over the place from her mouth and I am freaking out thinking she just busted every tooth in her face, broke some bones and we need to go to the hospital NOW..

We get her inside while she is wailing and try to clean her up to see what is going on. The inside of her mouth is cut where her teeth hit lips and her lips are so swollen. It hit her square on the mouth. She calmed down fairly quickly though while I nursed her and her favorite kitty sat on my lap as well and she stroked the kitty while nursing.

I don't think there is any major damage but her lips are still pretty swollen at 9pm (she's asleep) and this happened at NOON. I couldn't get her to suck on a ice cube in a wash cloth and we don't have any popsicles or I would have given her one of those...

I just needed to share that because it was truly the first time since she's been born that I thought she was SERIOUSLY hurt, DH agrees, we both thought we were taking a trip to the hospital and it was really scary...

Ironically that is something I had been worried in the past over because they had been in that stance before (the tree has been down since winter) and I always moved DD out of the way because I could see it happening and it did...EPIC parenting failuregreensad.gif

Oh mama!  I'm glad she is alright and that nothing was seriously wrong with her.  I remember that first time my oldest got hurt.  We only had her then and her lips were very swollen and I thought her nose was broken.  I was scared, too.  I called my dad and he told me that children are very resilient and he was right.  Even when you DO have to go to the hospital, kids adapt to injuries quite well and heal very nicely most of the time.  I know that doesn't help the guilt we feel when accidents happen and we know we could have prevented it.  That is part of life, though.  We are all human and can't always prevent accidents from happening.    Hug your baby and hubby and just relax tonight!

Hugs mama!  We went away for a family weekend and dd managed to sustain 2 head injuries within 24 hours.  It was awful, and the first time she was really hurt.  Thankfully dd was fine and we didn't end up taking her to the hospital, we just kept our eye on her.

I was elbowed in the mouth when I had braces, but because I had braces it cut up my lips pretty bad.  I was swollen for a couple of days, though the initial swelling went down within 24 hours.  I would imagine that getting hit much harder it would be similar.  Hugs, little ones are super resilient.

Eventually when DH and I calmed down and she was napping, we were talking about how amazing it is that a kid can take a hit that would have an adult DEFINITELY in the hospital...

OK, I am breathing again, she is fine and the dog feels terrible. Poor dog got left alone outside while we were dealing with DD and probably felt so bad, she loves DD and would never hurt her intentionally!

So scary...I gotta toughen up for all the bumps and bruises to come!

So not a parenting failure.  Accidents happen!  When DS1 was 14 months he headed up the stairs at my parents house without my knowledge. (My mom was hospitalized, we had just walked in the door, and my little sister was encouraging him) He got to the second story, decided he wanted back down, lost his balance and rag dolled it down a huge flight of stairs.  I FREAKED.  I froze, apparently screaming, I thought I was watching my precious baby suffer a horrible death, at the very least a broken neck.  He lost two teeth, but had no other injuries.

Those first injuries are so hard to take! I think they're harder on us than they are on them. You should feel lucky you've made it this long without serious injuries! DD had her first mouth bleeding, swollen lips accident before she even started crawling. She smacked her mouth on the coffee table and little toy piano so many times when she was learning to pull up to things. She would bleed and cry like crazy everytime!

I think the worst was when she was about 4 or 5 months old and was starting to try and support weight on her legs. DH set her on the floor in front of the couch where he was sitting and, thinking she could stand holding onto the couch, he let go of her. She fell backwards and clocked the back of her head on the corner of the coffee table on her way down. I really thought she'd get a concussion from that one! It was just a little while before bedtime and I was so nervous about putting her to sleep that night. I spent a lot of time googling signs of concussion that evening!
