Talk to me about Southern Utah (St. George area)

Thread Starter
DH is seriously looking into a business opportunity in St. George. We visited for a few days, but it's so hard to get a good idea of what life will be like long term, especially since my DD is young, DS not even born yet, in terms of looking for schools, etc. I don't even know where to begin.

I am originally from the northeast, so a move to Utah is so different for me. We are also Catholic, not LDS.

Can anyone offer any thoughts/advice? Thanks, mamas!

I've never lived in St George. But I grew up in Logan, Utah and was LDS. I am no longer LDS and I don't think I would ever be able to live anywhere in Utah outside of Salt Lake (more diversity in SLC). Maybe you'll get more responses from mamas in Utah.

I have lived in So. Utah in various areas since 1979. St. George Catholic Church is the main parish for So. Utah , link following.

There are several homebirth midwives, feel free to pm me as I have worked with several of them.

There is also a great AP moms group that is non-denominational, I loved this group while I lived in St. George (2003-2008).

The biggest adjustment to those new in the area is the weather. Summer is HOT! July-August average temps are 105-115 with at least 3 weeks in August being over 110 daily. Fall/Winter/Spring are wonderful. There are hundreds of miles of bike/walking trails, numerous parks, a lot of them with splash pads. The Library is great with fantastic children/family programs.

If you are into outdoor recreation there are several National parks within easy driving distance, Zion Park is 45 minutes, Bryce Canyon (where I live) is 2.5 hours, Grand Canyon North Rim is 3.5-4 hours. As well as numerous state parks and recreation areas.

Craigslist for St. George has a lot of apartment listings so you can get a feel for cost of living.

If you have any more questions let me know.

Have a great day!
