a new history book

I got this book from the library:  http://www.amazon.com/Then-Now-Short-History-World/dp/0887765408/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1303252226&sr=8-1

I would love to have other people look at it and give me their thoughts.  I am not a history buff.  I was looking for a general source as an introduction to world history that was secular.  So far, this seems good.

Let me know what you think. . . please keep in mind that I am looking for secular. . . but I really want input about the historical content.  If I decided to get this, it would be used as an intro to many world history topics and we would use additional resources for depth.

I haven't seen this book but have put it on hold from our library.

Christopher Moore is a well respected Canadian historical writer who contributes to our national history magazine and writes for both kids and adults in a variety of formats. His Big Book of Canada and the co-authored The Story of Canada are some of our favourite Canadian geography/history books.  I find in general his stuff to be excellent. I can't imagine it wouldn't be secular.

Thank you for the info on the author.  This book was just published this year; I can't find any useful reviews of it.  I did finish reading it tonight and it is def. secular (yeah!).  In fact, I really liked the book.  I would still like to hear other people's reactions to it--esp. from someone who likes to read history books.  But, for now, I think I will plan on using it as our "guide" next year and pull from the library to supplement it.

I like my current "use the library" approach except that I feel like I don't know where I am headed next.  I think I need a general outline to focus my path.  The past couple years we have been studying US history and world cultures.  We really need to hit world history--but I've been reluctant to approach it because it seems so intimidating and overwhelming.  This book seems to put it in perspective for me.
