Help me make the leap to solid solids

DS has been given and enjoys adult thick oatmeal, mashed sweet potato, mashed banana, bits of pink grapefruit, lemon wedges, hummus, mashed beans. A tiny bite of meat & fish when we were eating it. Oh, avocado of course. I need to broaden his horizons. He has 6 teeth if that makes a difference. I'm scared to offer real, not soft mashed, solids. Where should I start and how should I prepare it? I need easy things. Also, should I get a baby led weaning book? I need direction on this topic!

Thanks!

What do you eat?  The easiest thing to do is pick things that you're already eating that you can give him.

headscratch.gif ds has no teeth and eats solids just fine. Just cut things into long strips (cucumber, paprika, whole grain bread, etc. )and put it in his hands. Your ds will manage the rest. eat.gif

I guess I'm just worried about not knowing something. I didn't know about strips instead of circles until a friend mention it when she had her first. So does that mean no grapes? What if I give him an apple slice and he bites off a choking size bite? I know he can't have honey but what else? Can he choke on a bean? What about a chickpea? Can I give him raw leaf lettuce?

Hmm, I would only give grapes after slicing them in half. As for biting off too large pieces, well then you fish it out if you think your baby can't/isn't chewing it. Beans/peas are in my experience just fine. As for raw lettuce - I would avoid it until he's got molars just because - in my experience - it can get stuck to the roof of their mouths just like paper and make your baby mad and scare the pee out of you. Try some steamed broccoli, too!

One thing that is helpful to remember is even if you don't see their teeth - they are usually right up there under their gums.  So they can mash REALLY well but they can't cut through tough things.  My babe is 10 mos, so a bit older, but some things she has enjoyed (and only has 2 teeth at this point)

chicken - esp chicken that has been in soup

cut up chicken nuggets

steamed/soup carrots

cheddar cheese - cut up into bites

pasta - spag. noodles or penne cut into smaller pieces

peas

pears cut up

blueberries - I cut in half even if they are small because I don't think they can pop the skin open

She only wants to feed herself.  So I make the bites big enough for her to realistically be able to pick up herself.  My DH gets a little scared about chocking, but she's #3 and I know she can do it.  I always keep her in my sight when she's eating (I know it goes without saying, but I don't even pop out of the room.  That's my disclaimer for being a bit more aggressive about what I feed her)

I was like you a couple of weeks ago! DS liked mashed stuff but couldn't quite get a handle on how to chew. He would gag a bit and get frustrated. I just started by making his mashes and purees more chunky and introducing things in little bits to see what he could handle and then 2 weeks ago it just clicked! He all of sudden loved chewing and picking stuff up and he started eating a lot of what we eat.

I started giving him bits of rice cake and teething biscuits because they dissolve in his mouth and make it easier for him to gum them.  Then he got the hang of that and I started giving him steamed broccoli, bits of chicken, ground beef, bits of pasta, bread, banana...pretty much anything!  I started out with REALLY small pieces because I was paranoid, but now the pieces are usually about the size of the end of my thumb- some things I guess I give him big chunks and he takes bites off like rice cakes and teething biscuits but other stuffI just make sure the pieces are small and soft and give him water in between some bites so nothing is sticking around too much. I don't give him strips of stuff so much, just bite size pieces. Be careful with giving them all at once- my DS will sometimes stuff them all in his mouth and keep stuff in his cheeks like a little squirrel!

Now he wants to eat whatever we eat and I have a freezer full of mashes and purees that I have to coax him to eat in between bites of solid solids. I think the purees keep his poop softer than if he was just eating solids though because they have a bit of water in them.

Like Terri said, if the chunks are too big and he gags or get frustrated you can stick a finger in his mouth and fish them out. My DS hates it when I do that, but sometimes I get freaked out!

Thanks for the details!  Last weekend I was giving him bits from an Amy's Somosa burrito - he loved it, especially the peas!  Last night I gave him an apple wedge and let him go at it.  I did have to fish a couple of larger pieces out of his mouth, and he did gag once, but otherwise, all good.  He was really happy with that!  I started giving him water in a cup last week when I noticed he was doing the chipmunk thing LOL  Oh gosh he gets so excited when he sees that cup!  He loves drinking the water!  I did give peeled grape pieces (wasn't sure if he could deal with the skins?) and he really likes those too.  Really, the only thing that's not fun about this is the diapers!
