Another carrot question - is it possible to grow carrots in a deep container?

We live on a very small plot in town.  We are also overrun with bunnies!

Our DS wants to grow a garden and has specifically requested a salad garden - lettue, tomatos, carrots, etc.

The lettuce and tomatos I can handle but carrots are new to me.  I think if I did plant them in the ground, the bunnies would get to them and eat the tops off.  My idea was to plant them in a tall, deep pot on the porch.  Feasible?  The porch gets full sun all summer.

A raised bed is not an option this year.

I grew carrots last year in a recycling bin 1/2 full of potting soil and they did great, much better than in my clay soil.  We used a shorter (~5 inch carrot) variety, and the tops grew over the sides of the container quite quickly.  They did kind of fall over the sides a bit, though, which probably would have been bunny accessible, if we didn't have sadistic cats who keep bunnies far, far away.

I have also had success growing a shorter variety of carrots in containers with potting soil. Good luck! I think your plan sounds great and will work well.

Mindymom - just had to say, I love your blog! smile.gif

Ok, shorter carrots in a pot it will be!

I have several large (and deep) pots and I will dedicate one to carrots.
