Bottom balm/spray-- to buy or to make?

I've been looking at products like Earth Mama Angel Baby's new mama bottom balm and the spray version. Do you think these are the way to go, or would you just make your own version using something simpler, cheaper, etc?

Last time I used Dermaplast, but would rather go the natural route this time.

I use 2oz witch hazel and 2 oz water with two drops of tea tree oil.

Oh, that's easy! And cheap! (since I already have all of those things on hand) orngbiggrin.gif

So, you'd forego the store bought products?

The EMAB spray is sort of silly and pointless, IMO. The balm is nice. Are those new? I had some version of them as far back as '06.

Witch hazel is great as are Tucks type products. They feel great in a PP pad.

wait, Im sorry, Ive misread. I DONT suggest you put tea tree oil on your new mama bottom. I was telling you my recipe for baby wipe spray. For new mama bottom I used witch hazel and comfrey on family cloth style wipes (like a tucks basically) and motherlove apricot oil once or twice a day. The apricot oil was great for DD's flaky newborn head too.

Oh, okay. Thank you for clarifying! That may have been scary. lol.gif

Where do you get comfrey? (in what form? loose leaves that you steep?) I will look into the apricot oil, too. Thanks!

Steeping loose leaves would work, but beware that it can go sour like tea if its not tinctured or kept in the fridge. The fridge makes it too cold for my bum, so i used this:

http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=comfrey+extract&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&oe=UTF-8&rlz=1I7TSNA_enUS385US385&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=7393033268559628714&sa=X&ei=36avTbWKCpGctwfzrN3dAw&ved=0CEQQ8wIwAg#

I also used cucumber witch hazel. I think its way better than the 99cent (seriously, there should be a key for cents) witch hazel you buy from walmart.

For perineum care, in my peri wash bottle I used:

salt water

alcohol free witch hazel

various teas (chamomile was a favorite, lipton tea was also great)

plain warm water

I also used:

preparation H (as directed)

tucks pads & wipes

warm packs (rice socks, therma-care type carbon activated heat pads)
