bunkbeds are my nemesis

Along with fitted sheets and baby socks. . .but that's another post.

My kids have bunk beds that can also be twin beds. Currently they are set up as twin beds, which I think is prettier. But, they want bunk beds again. My biggest issue is making the top bunk. My six-year-old would be sleeping there, and she can't really make her own bed very well. Right now, I've been requiring her to make her own bed three days a week and I do it the other days.

So, anybody have tips or tricks for making the top bunk? I'm 5'2" if I stand up REALLY straight, so that doesn't help!

I've become a big fan of what I call the "faux-made bed".

DS always kicks off his comforter so I've taken to leaving the comforter flat and made on the bed, him sleeping ON the comforter, and taking a light blanket for him to actually use. In the morning, I just shove the light sheet in the crack between the wall and the mattress or somewhere else convenient. Voilà!

And I'm not sure if this is what you're referring to about the fitted sheets, but my mom tried to teach me years ago to fold them with no luck. This video made a lot of sense though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Z5k9nWcuFc

Can you just do a Scandinavian set up? I also hate making bunk beds. Ugh. Just put a fitted sheet on it (yes, still a pain in the butt!), and then have a comforter with a washable cover on it. You can either just give it a shake and toss it over the bed, or do the Norwegian thing where you give it a shake and leave it folded, so it only covers half the bed. There's nothing to tuck in with this system, it's easy to launder, and it looks "made" with a pretty simple shake. Your kiddo could just stand on one end of the bed and shake the comforter/duvet out to cover the bed. Done.

*Is* there a way to make top bunks in the traditional North American style without the mad "jump and pull" technique?!

I have a fitted sheet on DSs bed and a duvet. I don't bother to have the duvet tucked in, so he just jumps back into bed in the evening and pulls it around himself. I guess I don't worry so much about it being bunched up in the morning (but the times I have I can just stand at the ladder and give it a shake from the end/side and it ends up all right, no tucking). The duvet has a cover, so that just comes off and gets washed when needed. In winter I add another blanket and he just does what he needs with it. I'm 5'1" and when it comes time to change the fitted sheet I just get up there and put it back on (I get DS to take it off).

My dd has a loft bed. I have to stand on a chair to make it and still can't reach it all well.

I took the mattress off the bed to put the fitted sheet on and then put it back up. It was easier than struggling with the corners while it was on the bed.

For the top sheet and blanket I finally just tucked everything under the mattress along the side that faces the room. The other side is against the wall and the blanket on that side is loose. With the one side- and bottom end-  tucked in the bed doesn't look bad even if dd doesn't make it very well on the other side. I only had to tuck it in once and dd has not pulled it out.
