iui & Clomid

It's a first IUI for us!

I only ovulate occasionally on 200mg Clomid.

Has anyone done this with any other meds? The Dr.'s nurse said there was nothing else- no trigger shots... no u/s.

We have pretty low sperm count (his Dr. said we should go straight to IVF) with poor morphology & motility. (He started taking Clomid & this improved, from 1.5million to 16million). Still so low, I'm worried that we're throwing away our $$ on the IUIs. He is so wanting his own baby.

I think it's odd that you're not getting ultrasound monitoring to make sure that you're actually producing follicles, and also that you're not hyperstimulating. Also, how do they know when to time the IUIs if you're not getting ultrasounds or being given an hCG trigger? Our RE recommended a trigger even with intercourse, just so we'd know when to time it better. (We may or may not be doing the trigger, for complicated reasons, but it seems like it could be helpful.)

Also... you dh is taking Clomid?? I've never heard of that! It helps sperm count, too?

Hi Spacklemoo, I'm with Monkey Science. I'm not sure why you're not being monitored, especially since you mentioned that you only ovulate occasionally! I was followed with ultrasounds to make sure that my follicles were developing for each and every clomid/IUI cycle (I also got the hcg trigger). I know that other people will not get a hcg trigger and instead, just rely on the opk strips but I think you need more clarity on why you're receiving so little monitoring. As for your husband's sperm, the IUI would help in some way but with a low morphology, this could still be problematic. My DH also has a relatively low morphology according to the Kruger test (apparently this is the strictest of the tests) but as he tends to have a high sperm count, the doctor thinks that our infertility issues are probably not due to his sperm sample but rather, to something associated with my body.

Anyway, as someone who feels like she wasted a lot of time and money going through three clomid/IUI cycles (I had such thin lining from the clomid that I probably wouldn't have been able to get pregnant even if the sperm had fertilized the egg), I would ask more questions and get a good understanding of why your doctor is recommending what he/she is.

Good luck and let us know what you do!

I would definetly ask some questions. For us I have a base line ultrasound on day 1-3 just to make sure there are no cysts and to see my ovaries start producing follicles. I start Clomid on Day 3 and my DH is on Prednisone, then on Day 10 I go back for another ultrasound to see my follicles again and see where we are. I do a trigger shot on Day 11 and the IUI is on Day 12 (which is when my body normally ovulates). I would want at least an ultrasound on day 10 to make sure everything looks good. Good luck!
