Effacement is measured in the centimeter length (thickness) of your cervix.

When I feel for my cervix, I feel the actual os (the center of the donut) but then go on the outside of it all the way beside the cervix and reach back almost behind it and I can feel how thick or long it is also.  I have no clue in percentages what I am, I dont that have much experience with it but if I check myself a couple times, I get used to how thick it feels and can notice if it becomes shorter.

My midwife told me the most awesome story today of doing an internal exam on a mom close to delivery (before baby was engaged, so still floating) and doing a cervical sweep and feeling a nuchal hand reach out and try to grasp her fingers through the caul. WOW! She said she actually gasped out loud and said, "Oh my gosh!" - which of course freaked the poor mom out! How amazing is that?! It just astounds me that you can interact with an unborn child... just amazing. I've asked for two internals so far this pg (today and last week) and each time when she checked my cervix baby reacted to her touch by wiggling her feet back and forth along the top of my belly. I'm always so impressed by that. Though, she also said that even after ten years of doing this on a daily basis it STILL gets her that she can physically touch an unborn baby and have them react to it... so it isn't just me. ;)

Haha, so that little tiny bit of the bag that was sticking out four hours ago?... now is quite a bit more! I can feel it ballooning every time I have a braxton hick contraction! Such a weird sensation!

That is seriously cool! It sounds like you'll have a baby in your arms fairly soon!

I'm going to take a shower and see if I can feel anything exciting up there while I'm at it.

As far as the shock of baby reacting to stuff before born, I think it just shocks us because before they are out, there is something still so unreal about them.  At this point, when I imagine my little one in there and realize, I am full term, that baby is exactly the same as it will be on the outside as far as looks, movement (though she wont be as squished), grasping my finger (babies grasp their umbilical cords a lot I have seen on 3d ultrasounds) its just so wild.  I guess it just doesn't quite hit us until they are here even when we feel them moving around and stuff all the time.

Wow, though, to be doing a cervical check and feel the baby's hand... yeah thats pretty amazing!  Id never get used to that either.

I'm not very good at measuring how much, but it's definitely softer and stretchier than last week

haven't been able to feel my cervix for several days. I think it has vanished and I'm going to be pregnant forever.

I'm with you.  I'm just trying not to think about it right now.  These last weeks just crawl by, though.

Couldn't help it, I had to check again last night since baby dropped wayyyy down into the pelvis yesterday and I have had so much pressure since and a little bit of false labor last night.  For the first time, when I checked, I lost a little of my plug.  I guess its a weird thing to get excited about but hearing everyone else losing theirs or pieces and I havent had a single shred, well it felt good to see.  Also a little bit this morning.  Possibly dilated a bit more on the inside since I was 3-4 outside and only 1-2 inside.  I am thinking I am more 2-3 now inside.  Well, something is happening even if its slow.

I really wish I could reach my whole cervix. I'm not sure why it's positioned so weird, but it's just far enough back that I can only reach the front half. I can't get all the way inside to see the total dilation. I do know that the part I can reach is much more open than it was before. I need longer fingers or something. lol

Most of the time I have a hard time reaching mine as well.  I check it while on the toilet and while I am sitting there with my hand up, uh, ya know, I have to lean far forward so that the seat pushes against my hand for leverage so I can reach farther back, if that makes any sense.  Otherwise, I can't reach to the inside either.  Mine as shifted again and is at a weird angle now so I can only reach half now since last night.

I'm still only 1cm...I guess that's not terrible for just turning 37 weeks!

38 weeks today...just checked in the shower and I can't feel any changes.  I still can't reach my cervix and baby goes from being super low on my pubic bone to floating just above it.  I have had lots of mucous today and actually had three BMs so far...I haven't gone in almost four days prior to today!  Needless to say that made me feel better.  I don't think labor is anywhere close, though.
