If you buy meat by the animal..

If you buy your meat by the half a pig or quarter of a cow, or whatever, how much does it average out per pound?

For beef?

For pork/pig?

Chicken?

Turkey?

Other Meats?

We got humanely raised, local, mostly grass fed beef for a little less than $3/lb packed.

The beef we just got local raised although not 100% grassfed was $2lb Pork was $1.50 lb, locally raised as well.  Chicken is about $3 lb, whole- local and grassfed.  Those are this years prices.

here is a link to my 2009 buying experience, with prices  http://www.mothering.com/community/forum/thread/1146497/update-we-are-getting-a-side-of-beef-cost-numbers-in-post-21-any-tips-suggestions-on-getting-it-cut-and-packaged/20

The cost was the same in 2010 but the cow was slightly smaller.

We get a side of beef every year and a full for a pig. The price I pay the farmer (a mdc mama's dad) is based on hanging weight. So its usually about $750 and then the butchering is about $250 because we are foodies. A few people in the circle of friends who also get a side or half a side pay a lot less for butchering. We get all kinds of different things made up so its usually a bit more than average. One year for fun, DH weighed all the meat as we stocked it in the freezer. The hanging weight was about 375 and we ended up with about 200 lbs. This year it was a greater hanging weight, 425 and wow that makes a difference. There is about 15 packages of burgers at my parents house. So we figure its about $4 a lb out the door, expensive ground beef but very cost effective steaks.
