Safe waterproof and chemical barrier for a mattress?

I am the mom who removed the vinyl baby mattress from the bassinet and replaced it with bamboo ticking covered in cotton.  I also wrapped the crib mattress in Babe Safe plastic and used a thick cotton towel under a cotton sheet and 100% cotton bedding and sleepwear.

We did/do co-sleep at least 50% of the time, but, although we tried, wrapping our mattress was too noisy for us. So I searched LONG and HARD to find a 100% cotton mattress pad (not waterproof though), used cotton sheets, down pillows, and down comforter as well as a small wool puddle pad (for leaking milk mostly) under my side of the bed.

So, now we are about to transition our 2+ year old to her own twin bed for at least nap times and the first part of the night.  We are about to go to a local store and pick up a random mattress (organic in Alaska is AMAZINGLY expensive to ship/buy).  I know it will be full of all the wonderful chemicals that I have been so carefully avoiding so far.  We also will begin the potty training process soon and need a good waterproof solution.

What would you do?  I have looked for a twin size plastic wrap (like we did for her crib), but I have not been successful.  Is wool going to be able to block the chemicals?  She is a tummy sleeper too. :(  Any suggestions?

Ah, thanks for reminding me of the nights where I would wake up in a puddle of liquid, to realize that it couldn't have been pee due to location, nor drool(due to amount), and going, really? THAT much milk came out? hahaha

anyways, no advice, really, we just use normal mattresses, and don't do anything to them as far as chemicals (or waterproofing) are concerned.

but couldn't you wrap the plastic wrap the other way? around the width of the bed? or consider the sticky plastic stuff that you can put to cover the carpet? no idea if this would work, just trying to brainstorm with you!

I think if you get a wool mattress cover with a cotton pad you should be water proofed. As far as other mattress options, have you looked into a cotton futon?
