Any momma's out there with a child with a who has been diagnosed with Juvenile Arthritis? ? ? ?...

Yesterday my son was diagnosed with a mild form of  Polyarticular (the poly refers to in more than 5 joints)  Juvenile Arthritis and I'm looking for some other parents who've dealt with this before?

My son's symptoms started 3 years ago when he was about 10 months old.  He would be sitting with us and then we would put him down to walk and he would start limping.   Then every few months he would have a similar episode, not always in the same leg.  This has continued for the past 3 years.  We have seen pediatrician after pediatrician who have blown the issue off as being growth pains and it's been so sporadic that we didn't insist on further testing.   Then last month he had two major episodes of pain and a pediatrician who took the time to go ahead and do some blood work and X-rays.  The blood work showed a slight amount of inflamation however the doctor said she still didn't think it was arthritis but she would refer us to a Rheumatologist just to be sure.  Sure enough yesterday the Rheumatologist was able to identify arthritis in his knees, ankles, elbows and hands.  I must admit I was shocked.  I knew that there was something going on in his legs but nothing in the upper part of his body.  The Rheumatologist started him on a regimen of Naproxen twice a day for 3 months, however I'm not comfortable with the side effects so I'm trying ibuprofen instead because it seems to have the same effect with less risk of damage.

Have any of you dealt with this before, or given your child Naproxen? FYI Naproxen is the adult equivalent of Aleve.

I don't like starting a Naproxen regime on a child so young. My daughter (diagnosed at 2) would get stomach pains on this and we'd have to take her off for a time until she felt better. Ibuprofen never worked for us.

I don't like discussing my kid's private life online.. feel free to PM me if you want.

Just curious if he's been tested for lyme disease, since it can mimic Juvenile Arthritis, and it's a totally different protocol.

We have not tested for Lyme disease at this time.  It's pretty unlikely to be Lyme Disease because we lived in Arizona for the first 2 1/2 years of Alex's life, a place where there are very few ticks if any, because we lived in a desert.  Thanks for the thoughts though.

I'd not rely on it being "unlikely."  Lyme is everywhere in the US and terribly underdiagnosed.  I'd personally look at lyme and celiac disease.  I've seen several cases of JA turn around after gluten is eliminated.  It doesn't even need to be celiac-you'd just need to have antibodies to gluten for it to cause this type of issue.

I looked into both of these diseases and neither of them fit his symptoms.  I'm 99.9 % positive that the diagnosis is accurate with my little guy.

-Morning Stiffness

-Joint Swelling

-He tested positive for inflamation

-He goes in and out of remission

Also, the medicine that he is on seems to be helping a lot.  I'm taking this whole thing one day at a time and going from there.

Thanks for the input though.
