Looking for eclectic homeschoolers/unschoolers in Midcoast Maine

Hi - I'm trying to connect with anyone currently homeschooling in Maine (Knox county specifically).  I managed to convince my husband to let me keep my son home for an extra year but am feeling the pressure to register him for kindergarten next fall.  I am feeling very opposed to this but having a hard time convincing my dh. I'm hoping to connect with some families not only so I can better inform myself of all the practical pieces (how do I predict/do progress reports when our philosophy is we learn what we want when we want at the rate we want?) but also so dh can see the whole thing in action rather than just hear me blather on about it.  All I've been able to find in terms of resources is a local group which seems to be be faith based and curriculum oriented, which is not what I want.

So...if you are/were/know of a homeschooler in these parts please please contact me!

Hi,

I'm a homeschooling mom to a 7 year old first grader in Bath.  Maine is great for homeschooling, because it gives us the option of doing a portfolio to show what work they've done over the year.  You don't have to report to the state until they're 7 and then you have to show that they're making progress by meeting with a certified teacher to show them work samples in the portfolio.  There are a lot of certified teachers around who do portfolio reviews and welcome all kinds of homeschooling styles.  I would suggest joining the Mainehomeschooling Yahoo email list.  There is a lot of support on there.  Not sure how far away you are, but there's a nice homeschooling group, MMHC, that gets together for classes in Bath on Wednesdays and we do field trips on Fridays.  It's secular although we do meet at a local church.  Check it out at homeschoolmaine.com
