Dave Ramsey Question - upping deductibles on insurance policies. Is $5/mo worth it?

I know that Dave Ramsey suggests upping the deductible on your insurance policies while snowballing. We are just about to start the snowball. I checked with our agent and he said we'd save approx $5/mo or $60/year on our auto insurance policy by upping our deductible from $500 to $1000. If we have $1000 in our emergency fund it shouldn't be an issue to up our deductibles right? Or is it not worth it? My husband says it's not worth it. I think it adds up to one extra student loan payment per year.

Thoughts and opinions please :)

Thanks!

For 5 dollars I would not do it.  We changed our deductibles from 250 to 1000 and it made a pretty big difference in our bill (22 dollars or something) but yeah... for 5 dollars I would leave it.

I wouldn't change it, either, but there may be other ways to save on your insurance. If you could get by without a rental car if yours was in the shop, you could drop that coverage. If you already have AAA or something similar, you wouldn't need towing coverage on your auto insurance. These aren't huge expenses on your bill, but it's worth checking into. Call your agent back, and see if there's anything else you can change.

In any case, I do NOT recommend lowering your liability limits. Those should be as high as you can afford. I worked in insurance in my life before kids, and I can't tell you how many times I saw people who caused minor accidents and the medical bills/property damage easily exceeded their liability limits by thousands of dollars.

If you have homeowners insurance, you would probably save a lot more increasing that deductible to $1,000, but it probably won't be an enormous savings, either.

The best thing to do, in my opinion, is shop around. Rates change at least once a year, so if you haven't checked with any other companies within the past year, you could be overpaying.
