How To Hide FCLO In Foods/Drinks To Get LO To Take It

So I took the plunge and switched from Nordic Naturals + D to Blue Ice Fermented Cod Liver Oil. It came in the mail today, and since DS (3 ys) loves to take his Nordic Naturals, he was eagerly awaiting his new "fishy livers" (as we refer to them).

I opened the bottle and was hit with the most putrid smell ever! DS even backed away and he was already standing about a foot away to begin with.

I tried some, and it was all I could do to not gag. How in the world do you guys take this stuff?

A better question is, how do you get your LO's to take it? I can't stomach the thought of having paid all that moola for it and not using it, but I have no clue how to get it down!

I'm postin' up on this one... LOL! I've heard this about the FCLO and although I aspire to be taking it, I admit to being intimidated and sticking to my twin labs emulsified yummy orange flavored CLO that I chase with raw milk for a delicious sensation of an orange creamsicle! My kiddos take the Nordic Naturals chewables. When we run out of that, they willingly but not happily, take mine. I imagine the FCLO would be a mighty big problem for us too and I would hate to turn them off to taking it at all. I hear ya on the money spent though. Is it too gross to put into a smoothie maybe? How about one with strong flavors like peanut butter/banana? I'm shooting from the hip since I have no clue what kind of taste you're dealing with.  Oy. Standing by.

It's pretty darn gross. A strong tasting smoothie may work, I will have to give it a try. Something like that would be the ONLY way I could get that stuff near any of the members of my family.

When I tried to get DS to take some this evening, he ended up spitting it out. It landed all over his shirt and the floor, and man oh mighty, it stunk up the whole downstairs. DH walked in from the back yard and immediately started sniffing and asking what that horrid smell was. When I told him what it was, he threatened to divorce me if I didn't get rid of it. lol.gif He was kidding of course. He said it smelled like someone's dirty.....ah...use your imagination. Yeah, it smells THAT gross!

I have the orange flavor... yeah, I don't taste orange at ALL.  However the only way I can get rid of the taste is by following it with a big glass of orange juice for a chaser.  I haven't tried actually mixing it INTO the juice but I think it would just separate immediately and not actually help.  Eating an actual orange helps too in place of drinking juice.

This entire scene is so hilarious! I read it, cracked up laughing and read it out loud to DP- who also chuckled. Your poor LO!! Too cute. Aaaaaaaand, my imagination is wildly fermented winky.gif LOL

Do you have twin labs emulsified or is there an orange flavored fermented variety too? eeeeeee... yeah, mixing it in sounds like an unsuccesful experiment waiting to happen. The milk is KEY for me. I don't waste any time swallowing. Down the hatch!! It completely takes care of the bit of funky flavor that even the reg CLO seems to have. I can't imagine a fermented one flavored orange. My friend wasn't into the twin labs orange at all either, so if we're talking about the same one, you're not alone. I can handle some pretty gross stuff but the FCLO seems like it will be a stretch. I'm doin' good here with the orange. Maybe we'll all find some miraculous solution through this thread!

Onward with the solution search... and a huge kudos to April our champion guinea pig biggrinbounce.gif Hugs, oh brave one!

Nope, I have the blue ice fermented orange flavor, but i'm pretty sure the only thing 'orange' about it is the label.  It is just a bunch of nasty fish smell really.  I don't think milk would cut it for me though... I need the stronger acid in the juice haha.

I hear you... I thought you might be refering to a fermented one. From the sound of it, milk wouldn't be cutting it for me most likely either.

AprilM - is yours flavored at all? Seems as though it's not going to matter much, just curious. Twin labs makes a mint one too- the thought of that totally grosses me out.

Oh just fantastic. I almost ordered some FCLO yesterday.... now I'm wondering if it's such a good idea. My older son gags taking ANY thing let alone something this bad! I almost puke anytime I've taken Castor Oil....soooo groosss. And that is oily but not putrid...... don't they have it in pill form?

I have the Blue Ice Orange Oslo liquid form from Green Pastures. And I don't taste orange at all either! They do come in gelcaps, which would work better for me, but I couldn't get DS to take those, he is too little to swallow a pill.

I tried the orange juice chaser recommendation, and it totally helped! I didn't mix it in with the juice. I swigged the "stuff" first, while holding my nose, and then immediately downed the OJ.

Those gummies sound.....not at all yummy.

Oh BTW, the shirt that DS spit it out onto has been soaking in a sink of laundry detergent overnight, and it STILL smells like it!!!!

I got the smell out with a good soak in oxyclean free and clear after spraying it with shout.... stuff is nasty!

We picked orange too because it sounds the best, right? Wrong. The orange is WAY strong. I remember reading on the green pastures site something about the latest batch of orange being especially.....pungent. We just finished a bottle and started on a Cinnamon Tingle clo/butter oil blend and it is SOOOO much better. (even though the idea of cinnamon fish doesn't sound right)  I also found out is that something tart as a chaser (we used pomegranate cranberry juice) works better to mask the taste than OJ.

Good to know. Thanks!

We have the blue ice fermented orange clo and take it with naked juice mighty mango (or rather the Trader Joes version) and my kids totally down it with no problem. The thickness of the juice makes it mix in pretty well. I can still smell it an all that but I'm amazed at how that juice masks so much of the nastiness. I'm not crazy about having to buy that juice but I figure if a small glass gets my kids to take the fermented clo then it's definitely worth it. Hope that's helpful!

I bought the FCLO/butter oil capsules. My 2 and 4 yr old just chew them. Their breath smells just terrible when they are done, but they do it because I'll give them Enjoy Life chocolate chips when they finish. Just a thought...

I'm with jlwagner and gabbyraja - I bribe. My son loves syringes, like the ones that come with ibuprofen, and I must say they've come in handy a lot. I get my "super special medicine" with juice first, and I act like I love it. I squirt the CLO (green pastures) into the back of my throat and chase it with a shot of black cherry juice in a coveted little sake cup. Then son gets to do the same. He has to control the syringe himself, and I quake as it threatens to be ejected all over the kitchen, but he knows the rules and squirts it in the way back for the bribe of "super special juice." He really truly does like the green pastures cinnamon fish, but it took a while for him to tolerate the cinnamon. He also likes liverwurst, so factor that in.

Having said that, it's all an act on my part, and just writing this out I feel a little queasy. As a result, I take the CLO much less than I need to, and I always wonder if I'd get more benefits from a yummy substandard brand that I took daily.

has anyone tried the licorice flavor?  It says "kid tested", whatever that means!!  :)

haha wow. yeah i wimped out and got the capsules. i got the emulsified gel stuff for the kids. my dd bravely took it right off the spoon "mmm, chocolate medicine" but she only did that once... ds wouldn't come near the spoon. i just broke my blender but i plan on blending it and making a chocolate/pb smoothie or doing a chocolate strawberry smoothie to cover the nasty. i haven't tried it yet but sounds like a good idea lol.gif

in my experience, a smoothie just makes a larger volume of nasty to have to drink. smile.gif

I mix it with some apple sauce for my LO (almost 2yo) and he eats it very well. I don't think he noticed any difference. I always get the cinnamon flavour. Me and DH are just taking a spoon and following with a drink. It's not that bad, if you don't try to smell it .
