Camping in a tent at 18 weeks

Thread Starter

After 3 yrs trying to get pregnant I am now 5wks.  We are hoping to go to France in a tent with our 5 year old daughter in the summer, but am really unsure now as I don't want to do any thing that might be dangerous to the baby and don't know how safe it is to sleep in a tent on an air bed when pregnant, I will be 18 wks at the time we hope to go.

I can't see how it would be dangerous to sleep in a tent while pregnant.  The only thing I would worry about or plan ahead for would be comfort, and having to get up to use the washroom in the middle of the night ;)  Also basic food safe in regards to washing hands and food preparations.

I totally plan on camping this summer though, in a tent with an air mattress.  I hope to get a porta potty though lol....

What about bedding? Pillows aren't safe for a newborn and I don't believe sleeping bags are either. I am not sure whether air mattresses fall under firm mattresses for cosleeping. Maybe try posting in the cosleeping forum about bedding? I don't see why camping itself would be an issue, just the bedding.

I think she means she'll be 18 weeks pregnant :-)

I can't see how it would be a problem, as long as you think you'll be comfortable.

You need a honey bucketlol.gif  (basically a bucket with a toilet seat on top)  They work great and it's what we use at night when we camp every summer...they are the perfect size for kids as well.

I will say there is nothing to be worried about camping while pregnant. We camp every summer and so I've had 3 summers camping while pregnant...2x at the end of the 1st tri/beginning of the 2nd and 1x during the first tri.  The worst part for me was the morning sickness, but by 18 weeks that's typically done.

The one thing I'd make sure to have is plenty of water to stay hydrated if it's hot...otherwise tent camping on a air mattress will be fine, maybe a bit uncomfortable, but that depends on how much you are showing by 18 weeks, for me I hardly have a bump so it's never been bad.

Have fun!  I want to go to Franceorngbiggrin.gif

I went at 20 weeks during my last pregnancy.  It was totally fine, although the air mattress was extremely uncomfortable for my hips.

i went camping at burning man while 19 weeks preggo with twins last year!  that being said i good air mattress that does not leak to bad (they all leak i promise) and somewhere to go pee in the middle of the night (though i found the pee issue was a early and late pregnancy thing 18 weeks was not when it bugged me)  i also camped when i was just 12 weeks and that was actually harder, i was more tired so setting up and taking down camp was harder and like i said the pee issue was annoying, but i have a http://www.whizbiz.com.au/ and swear by them preggo or not! so i just used a large close-able non jug i dumped each morning and a curtain in a corner of the tent so i didn't have to pee in from of my hubby.

also in either case i would prioritize having a tent that you can stand up inside easily, crawling around and hunching over preggo is lame

haha doh *hits head*

It should be fine when 18 months pregnant depending on how big you are then. IME when you are bigger, it is hard to get up off the floor but it isn't that bad. The only thing I think is an issue is remaining hydrated. Plan on bringing lots of water.

I went camping regularly until I was 8mo pregnant with my DD.  Like one of the pp said, the most annoying thing is having to go to the restroom at night.  Other than that, everything was perfectly fine.

I went camping at about that far along, and again at 28 weeks, and it was great. We chose sites with easy access to the restrooms, and I used an air mattress instead of my usual mats. I was actually more comfy than sleeping at home.

I went camping at 25 weeks and 34 weeks and it was great.  I did use my DD's portable potty in the middle of the night on the later trip.  I found my air mattress was quite comfortable and I really enjoyed the trip.

Have fun!!!

I went camping at 34 weeks and I slept on the ground in a sleeping bag! I was a little sore after 3 days of that, but it was fine and we had a blast :) I wouldn't worry at all! Enjoy the air mattress ;)

i camped last time around at 35 weeks...it was super uncomfortable (the air mattress died, all my friends were drunk and loud, and it POURED rain). i was not a happy camper!!!!

I'm 25 weeks with my first baby, and I've been camping a bunch over the last few months. Having an air mattress will be a lifesaver, and have a plan for peeing all night long!

I'm 33 weeks and we're going camping this week/end. I'm packing an extra pillow for my belly, other than that it's camping as usual. Go and have fun!

I camped at 28? 29? weeks in a tent with an air mattress and found the air mattress soooo comfortable that we set it up in our bedroom when we got home!  I slept on that until the final month of my pregnancy when just nothing was comfortable.  Have fun in France!!

SO happy to find this thread.  We do a lottery system to get a campsite every year and we got my 36th week of pregnancy.  I assumed i shouldnt go but dont want to miss it- it's a gorgeous place on the ocean and my brother and wife will be going for the first time in 16 years.  I think I might give it a shot!

I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to do it one more time before you have kids.

I was in the first trimester last year and felt really sick, but just relaxed in the shade a lot.

Bring lots of extra stuff to make yourself comfortable; pillows, lounge chair, yummy dry snacks for nausea, books to read.

I went camping every weekend from June to August with my last babe, who was born August 5.  It was harder to get my butt out of the tent, but no other issues!

We camp (in a tent) and hike regularly all the time, and have never stopped for pregnancies or newborns.

This is my lifesaver: http://www.freshette.com/sports_travel.html

Think about your comfort, but at 18 weeks, I don't think you'll be big enough to be uncomfortable yet...
