Guardians of Gahoole?

DD picked the first book from this series out at her school book sale. Is it going to freak her out? Is there a lot of death and sadness?

She also picked out Frightful's Mountain, a sequel to My Side of the Mountain, if anyone knows about that one.

I find the details provided at this site very helpful:

Thanks! I'd forgotten about that site. It does slightly iffy. Maybe I'll preread so we can talk about it. She likes to be prepared,

I found Guardians very creepy and worried that my kids might find it disturbing, but it really just rolled right off them. It's got this mind-control cult theme happening which of course I read all sorts of symbolic significance into, but my kids just understood that plot thread on the level of a weird fairy tale and weren't at all creeped out.

We had a similar experience with Neil Gaiman's Coraline (the book, not the movie). My abstract-thinking then-10-year-old and I found it dark and creepy. My younger kids thought it was funny and weird and that was all.

Yeah, mind control isn't likely to bother her, but it does look like there may be sad deaths, or worse, parent-child separations and/or deaths.

Parent-child separation, sad deaths, war, kidnapping and slavery, and an evil brother who tried to kill his younger siblings.

I don't think my 6 year old could handle it. I think my 9 year old could, but he's not interested.
