VBAC for diabetic

Thread Starter

My friend is due in August and wants a VBAC. She has gestational diabetes, as she did last time, and is on an insulin pump. Her OB of course won't even entertain the idea of a VBAC. I have attended many VBACs as a doula over the last 11 years, but am realizing she is actually the first one that I've worked with who has other complications besides just having a previous c-section.

Any input, experience, ideas, questions for her to make sure she acts, things to make sure she does etc...?

Thanks!

I strongly suggest you and the mother read up here on GD, http://www.plus-size-pregnancy.org/gd/gd_index.html

I'm a type II diabetic. I was on metformin prior to being pregnant and during the first 2 trimesters. I went on insulin (not pump, sliding scale injected) my 3rd trimester. My (very pro-vbac) OB was not concerned as my blood sugar levels were kept in control. There is a perinatologist on my ICAN board who said as long as the blood sugar is under control, it's not "high risk." Additionally I was 42 years old, obese and hypothyroid- alot of doctors would consider me high risk. I had a level 2 US done, and my OB had me do weekly NST from 36 weeks and kick counts.

IMHO your friend needs to find a new pro VBAC OB if she wants to VBAC. Her current OB sounds like the guy who is going to schedule her ERCS at 39 weeks. She will have a fight on her hands if she stays with him.
