Doublers for nighttime

Thread Starter

We use cotton fitteds and I put 2 doublers in at night.  Well the past week or so DS has been peeing through it. First I pulled the wool cover out and that helped, but he is still dripping wet in the morning so I added a 3rd doubler.  Still not enough!  (The diapers are on their second child so they're a little worn out.)  I don't want to get different diapers for nighttime, but I think I'm in need of some new/different doublers. What brands/fabrics do you use?

Hemp is the most absorbent for how thin it is.  I would recommend a hemp prefold trifolded like a letter.  Experiment with lining the fitted with the prefold vs. lining the cover with the prefold (IOW, diaper him in the fitted as usual and put the hemp prefold inside the cover before putting it on).

When you purchase hemp brand new it needs to be pre-washed 5 times separate from your other diapers to maximize its absorbency and get rid of the hemp oils.  After that they can all be washed together.

All this being said, more doublers and especially hemp, will cost you $7 a piece (or so).  If it were me, I would get 2-3 premium diapers for nighttime just to make my life a lot easier.  My favorite nighttime diaper is a BG OS with doubler if necessary.

Willow Sprouts Premium Organic Hemp Diaper  (I was able to find this on clearance and it has been great for nighttime.)

This is long so you can fold it however you want and even double up your folds so you have several layers where you need it most.

Use the hemp underneath the cotton.

Hemp babies are super thin and so absorbent - they have 2 layers of hemp/cotton blend. They are 3$ each at cottonbabies.com and other sites - currently out of stock at cotton babies. There is also a 3 layer just like this made by giggling green bean for $4.95 each (sweet pea hemp doubler). I use one inside a prefold cover it with a fleece liner then put a disana soaker over it all. Sometimes I add a cotton flannel doubler on top of the hemp doubler. I also have a wool mattress pad that my LO sleeps on beside me - they also make wool puddle pads that are cheaper than the mattress pad that really help to avoid leaks and having to change sheets. HTH!
