104.5 fever-what temp to give meds?

Dd2 (age 2) ran a fever of 104.5 last night. I gave her tylenol because i was so worried, even though i have never given her fever reucing meds before. dd1 (4) has now come down with the same stomach flu and i expect her temp to rise tonight.

So, at what temp if any do you give fever lowering meds? at 104.5 little dd2's heart was beating so fast and her breaths were fast and shallow and that was why i got so scared and gave her the medication. Is it better to lettheir fever rise while their body fights off the disease?

Thanks all
Sarah

That's when I medicate. For discomfort. It could be 100 or 104. It's when they are uncomfortable.

I did this last night at 103. It brought the fever down enough that he was finally able to sleep (just screaming before that). 90 min after the dose, his temp was still 101.7, so its not like it completely removed the fever.

We medicate for comfort here, too. Doesn't matter what temp it is, although my kids usually start getting uncomfortable around 103 or 103.5. When it's gone higher than that, it's been because they were asleep and weren't registering the discomfort and I wasn't noticing the temp. I totally believe in the need for fevers, but I also remember how good it feels to have some relief when you're that sick.

I have never given DS (3) conventional fever reducers and yes he has had very high fevers sometimes. I believe that they potentially can cause more harm than good. There is LOTS of medical info out there indicating that fever is an adaptive host response that can interfere with healing and increase morbidity and mortality. With that being said - I also don't want my son to be so uncomfortable that he can't sleep or is totally miserable. When he has gotten that way, I have used homeopathic remedies to bring down his fever and reduce discomfort with great success.

If you are interested in fever and it's benefits and the dangers of antipyretics (particularly tylenol) please PM me Id be happy to share my info.

Don't use them at any temp.  There are non-harmful ways to make a kiddo comfy.

We were given Baby (liquid) Tylenol and Baby (liquid) Motrin at our baby shower and they were open and used at least once each, but I just threw out all that type of stuff last year or the year before because it was long expired and we just don't use it. DD is 10 now and has had a handful of high fevers. We mostly ride it out, but have also employed tepid baths, cell salts, and other methods.
