Searching for mid-wives or a birthing center near Columbus OH

Hi, I am already a mother of one and my husband and I are trying for our second. I do not want to have a hospital birth again (I had some negative experiences) does anyone know of a good birthing center or have positive experiences with a mid-wife near Columbus OH?

You could call Choice. They have lots of great midwives and doulas. I wish there was a birthing center I could recommend. We need one here!

Like Chrissy said, unfortunately, there is no birthing center in Columbus. In fact, I believe Family Beginnings in Dayton is the only one in the state right now. CHOICE is great for homebirths, or there are some practices that employ CNMs for hospital births (like Women's Contemporary Healthcare).

Really really love Becky Wagner at Women's Contemporary Healthcare.  Emily is supposed to be great too, I've just only met her once.  It is a hospital birth, but they do water births (the only practice in the area to do them in a hospital) and if you're having an unmedicated birth they stay with you while you labor.

Yeah that! She delivered my DD. Didn't end up getting to labor/deliver in water like I wanted b/c I chose to be induced at 41w5d. St. Ann's is beautiful.

While CHOICE does a good number of the Columbus homebirths, there are other midwives around, if they don't suit  you. I've been doing births all over southern OH for 30 yrs & know most of the OH homebirth midwives. Contact me for the closest contacts. 740-286-5756.

CNMs can only practice in hospitals in Ohio. The only birth centers in this state serve only Amish clientele. If you want an out of hospital birth, your only option is to have a home birth with a direct entry midwife of some sort. Go for it! I have heard some negative reviews of CHOICE. You may get better care from someone else.

There is at least one Birth Center in Ohio, other than the Amish ones.  Family Beginnings is in Dayton, Ohio.  It is technically located within the confines of the walls of a hospital, but it is run independent of it and separate from the main L&D Floors, but if needed you can be easily transferred. There are nurses who are specially hired and trained just for the Birthing Center and do not, in general, work the main L&D Floor.  Occassionally, if it is during normal business hours, and there are no patients in the Birthing Center, if there is a momma who is risked out of FB (ie VBAC) but wants natural birth, they will go assist as best as possible, but will  have to leave it a registered FB patient comes in.

There is one on one nursing, again only time there might be different is if two patients show up and there is only one nurse, you might have to share until the on-call nurse arrives (usually w/in about 20-30 mins).

Kathy Mitchell. She is incredible. When I was searching for a midwife, I only found CHOICE until I stumbled across Kathy on an Internet search. Best decision we made! She's amazing. She's located in Heath, Ohio, but travels to Columbus for a lot of her births.

While few CNM's do homebirths in OH, they CAN, & some do. So  don't give out false info!
