proactive measures: educate the ER at your local hospital

My sister's son was forcibly retracted by an ER nurse. I told this story to a good friend of mine who happens to be an ER nurse. She said she was glad I told the story because she had no idea not to retract the foreskin of boys. I also have another friend who works as a public nurse who tried to retract my sons foreskin while changing his diaper when DS was ~ 6 months old. I sure am glad I was hanging out talking to her at the time. She had no idea either.

Then, after reading a few posts about boys who were forcibly retracted I got the idea from the wonderful advice to tell everyone you come in contact with in the medical profession to leave your boys penis alone............

How about walking in to your hospital ER (without an emergency need) with printed information about the care of an intact penis (especially the info which states that it is not necessary to retract the foreskin to obtain a urine sample).

It wouldn't cover all the hospitals in the country but if we all did it and asked friends who lived elsewhere to do it then some boy might be saved the agony.

edited to imply that this could be done simply to educate, and not just to provide immediate protection for your son

In 1998 I wrote up the Intact Care Agreement because of a doctor retracting my eldest at his 4-month check-up. It can be found here. Many people have used it and changed it to their liking.
