Hemmroids

Hi all. So I have been suffering from hemmroids since a few weeks after my son was born in July. It has been off and on and I am so upset with myself for letting it go on this long. I keep hearing things about colon cancer so I called my midwife who recommended me to a rectal specialist. My appt. Is another month away and I will probably get a rubber band litigation. This sounds like pure torture. I have tried alot of natural things and admitingly have not done them as regularly as I should. Has anyone had this procedure done? What remedies do you use at home for hemmroids? I am so scared...

Also if you had them with a pregnancy and/or pp did you have them again with additional pregnancies?

I have successfully treated myself with butcher's broom, an herb.  also horsetail.  If they are really bad though you might need the surgery, sorry don't know about that.  don't know about next pregnancies either because I'm only having one :)  but the herbs do work for mild/moderate.  good luck, it sucks I know!

Before you consider surgery, how much do they interfere with your life? Because from what I have read, a LOT of people lose bowel control after hemorrhoid surgery.  Also people frequently have hemorrhoids reappear after the surgery.  Those risks are not worth it to me.  I've had hemorrhoids since before my daughter was born a year ago.  I figured they would go away, and they didn't.  They do not hurt and don't cause any discomfort to me.  They are just gross and make it harder to clean after a BM.  I don't know how bad yours are, but I am prepared to live with mine to avoid surgery.  Good luck in your decision.

My mom had the surgery and said it was terrible and would never do it again.  I have had good luck with Healing Natural Oils (google it) and their Oil.  Worked for me and my DH.  My dad wouldn't do it regularly and he didn't notice improvement. YMMV.

OP Well first you are talking about rubber band ligation which is NOT surgery.

I have had both. Hemmy's run in my family. Both my parents had the surgery, my uncle has had it, my grandmother had it  and I had it about 5-6 years ago BEFORE I had my child. I had been suffering with them off and on since my early 20's. They got increasingly worse as time went on. I tried EVERYTHING, natural and conventional (like the rubber banding). Some things helped a little, some helped alot but only temporarily. Of all the natural things I used the healing oils was the best. I decided to have the surgery after a great deal of research.

While it was pretty unpleasant and the recovery pretty bad, I would make the same choice over again. I have had no issues with hemmy's since even after giving birth and the incidence of them recurring after surgery is very low. The incidence of them recurring after rubber banding is much higher. The rubber banding while uncomfortable was really not that bad.

Got them with pregnancy number one and tehy were so bad pp I had a doc actually tell me, ouch sorry to hear about that, when he read my medical chart. Haha. My ob referred to tehm as the size of Texas.

Anywho, they flared up off and on in the time between dd1 and dd2. WIth preganancy 2 had them but more towrads the end, not as regularly or as severe as first time around. Second birth was much smoother. A few days after birth dh went to the pharmacy and got me some herbal cream that I would use when the flare up. But the seriouly haven't bother me in probably a year.

I personally would think really hard about surgery. I too have heard that they can reappear afterwards. I also don't know the extent of yours either, so if they are truely infringing on your quality of life and you have tried other stuff without success, then maybe it is the right choice for you.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I went to a family doctor today and he said I DO NOT need surgery! I am so happy and that I went to get another opinion.

Rubber band ligation is NOT surgery - just want to clarify. That is what you mentioned in your original post. They are 2 VERY different things. Surgery is reserved for intractable cases that do not respond to other less invasive approaches. It is a last resort. From what you have posted - this would certain;y not be you. But the rubber banding is an option of creams and such dont help you and seriously it is not bad - just uncomcortable for a bit.

I'm glad that you got some reassurance.  For you and anyone else who might search this thread:

During pregnancy, I had great luck with the Bleeding Hemorrhoids and Hemorrhoids fomulas from Healing Natural Oils. They make ones safe for pregnancy, and different ones if you are not pregnant. They might have helped more if I had been more consistent in using the oils.

I recently went to an ND who specializes in hemorroid and other rectal issues. I was concerned about the two hem tags I have, and the itching which had worsened into some scary looking bleeds. His examination showed that while i had the two tags outside, I had AT LEAST 6 hemorrhoids inside. He said the inside of my anus was just packed with them. He is treating them two at a time with electolosis (I think...basically burning them with electricity - a little uncomfortable, not at all painful, and no after effects at all).  He has done three so far, and will deal with the tags once the internals are gone. He has patients come from as far away as LA to Portland. He also teaches at the naturopathic college here. You might check NDs in your area for someone who can do this. It is amazingly simple and fast (and not cheap, although cheaper than surgery if you are paying out of pocket or a large co-pay).

I hope that helps you, or someone!

Karen- thanks so much for posting! If these ever get much worse I will look into this. I really appreciate you posting that. Hemmroids really should be talked about more because they are very common and so many people suffer from them without ever getting them taken care of...

I'm sorry you are suffering from this.  Rutin is helpful for hemorrhoids as are cranberries (you actually chop up cranberries and sit on them....although eating would help as well).   Lecithin is also helpful.

I don't think I can link to my own page, but if you click my sig link, there is a page on hemorrhoids.

Hope you find relief soon!   That is no fun.

Thanks for the link.  I ordered some of the hemorrhoid oil (safe for pregnant/nursing moms).  I had them really bad after my last birth.  I couldn't sit down without sitting on top of my Boppy for a week.  I still have them so hopefully this will shrink them beforehand so they're not as bad right after this birth, then I'll retreat those afterward.

I had hemmroids *really* bad for about a year or more after having my son. I tried drinking herbs like butcher's broom, homeopathics, acupuncture, yogic positions..whatever, nothing worked.

However,  I ended up trying a recipe for a suppository out of "Planetary Herbology" by Michael Tierra--and it completely healed them within a week or week and a half!! Its been probably about 2 years now and they haven't returned!!

The directions are to take coconut oil (I used raw/virgin), and mix in these powdered herbs:  Yarrow, bayberry, oak bark, comfrey root, a pinch of cayenne pepper and golden seal.
I think I used all of these in the mix, but intuitively feel that it was the goldenseal that really healed it.

It says to roll like pie-dough into suppositories but I found that the oil just melted, so i did my best, then stuck them in the freezer till they could hold a shape again..just be creative and get it to the width of your middle finger and an inch and a half long.  I just left them pre-made in the freezer for the week and they did fine for me.

Insert one each night while in bed (you might leak goldenseal..:)  pretty thought I know), so do when lying in bed.  This cleared mine within a week and a half, and noticeable difference after just a couple of days.  I think I just stuck with it for an extra few days even after symptom-free, just 'to be sure".

Good luck and I'm curious if this works for you.  It was so easy and fast, I wish more people knew about this.

PPK, were yours internal or external? I'd love to try something for mine, but they're external and apparently quite bad. :(

External...Ii had bulging lumps outside.

Another thing for quick relief of pain and pressure was to use oil and push them inside..sorry if that's TMI, but it would help alleviate pain for a little while...not a permanent solution, but helpful in times that I felt too much pressure/pain to want to walk long distances, etc..
